The media in today’s age can turn take controversial subjects and turn them into complete firestorms overnight. Many of these topics spark varying arguments about what should be done or what is right. One issue that brings about plenty of debate into the public eye is gun control. Fueled by a tragic number attacks, the cry for stricter gun control has never been louder. Although the outcry is louder than ever, restricting the gun ownership even more is not the answer. Fear can cause people to rush to conclusions that may not always be the proper solution. Thus is the case with gun control in America. In terms of gun control, the line of justice becomes ever increasingly blurred. Therefore, we must look to examples of this where choices have been made on this, and the results are indiscernible. In the words of Machiavelli, “A wise man ought always to follow the paths beaten by great men and to imitate those who have been supreme…” (Machiavelli 199). Relating this to a more modern extent, America must follow the actions taken by nations that have succeeded in enforcing effective gun control. In this sense, examples of poor gun control must be avoided as well. Looking at Britain and its ban of handguns is an excellent instance that should be evaded at all costs. Murders by firearms skyrocketed following this ban, and many can agree that this is not justice. Criminals are not keen on following laws, nor bans, so this was an excellent opportunity for them to take advantage of. Today it may seem as if the world is becoming a dark place where no one can be trusted and tragedies lurk around every corner. This notion is simply not true and fear mongers should not be able to radicalize gun control by playing on society’s sentiment after a tragedy. Singular events of violence are terrible and heartbreaking but, “For one swallow does not make a spring… not similarly, does one day or a short time make us blessed and happy” (Aristotle 122). In relation to gun control, this quote can help to understand how spearheading stricter gun laws following mass acts of violence is wrong. When instances are spaced out as much as they are, people must not be so quick to react so staunchly against firearms. These events, as terrible as they are, are the result of individual people, not the tools that were used. Taking away the freedom to own guns takes away hobbies that many people across the nation enjoy. Consequently, this robs these same people of happiness that they should not have to have taken from them as a result of the actions of very few social deviants. This happiness also lies in the idea of protection and safety from those who have ill intent.
