Jonathan Masters, in his article “Gun Control Around the World: A Primer” writes: “The debate over gun control in the United States has waxed and waned over the years, stirred by a series of mass killings by gunmen in civilian settings” (The Atlantic). Indeed, the fact that in the United States the constitution allows for ownership of guns by everyone, makes it difficult to address the problem of gun ownership. This problem is further exacerbated by the fact that over the years many violent events have been witnessed which have been carried out using guns, like the killing of twenty innocent schoolchildren in Connecticut. Phoebe Maltz Bovy, in his article on the New Republic opines: “Ban guns. All Guns. Not just because of San Bernardino, but also because of the shooting that’s going to happen next” (It’s Time to Ban Gauns). There is no doubt that because strict gun rules have not been enforced in the US, there have been a number of violent shooting incidents which have shocked the collective psyche of the people in America. In fact, Phoebe in his article argues that it is not even about stricter gun laws, but the very fact that we require the ownership of guns shows that there is a presentiment towards violence that already exists in the society. By removing the concept of gun ownership entirely, such a situation can be avoided. According to this writer, it is not about making stricter laws that limit gun usage, or limit ownership of different gun types etc. Rather it should be recognized that owning guns is leading to violent crime in our society. Therefore, it is important to make a distinction between different types of crimes. Murder through shootings is far too devastating a loss to bear for society, and it should not be confused with minor crimes, rather it should be taken as a reason to put a ban on private gun
