The Patriots were feeling defeated after the first 2 years of war, and the makeshift Pennsylvania winter camp didn 't add to their spirits. Valley Forge was a tough time for the American Army, and many soldiers wanted to quit because of the hardships. If I were a soldier, I would have quit Valley Forge for a multitude of reasons. The living conditions were inadequate, there was a minimal amount of supplies, and illness and death was common in the camp. In essence, the cons of staying at Valley Forge outweighed the Pros.
I am not going to re-enlist in the war because we have poor conditions, many people are dying, and we are getting very little support. The first reason I am not going to re-enlist in the war is because there were very poor conditions. In document C, the diary of Dr. Waldo, he says “Poor food-hard lodging-cold weather-fatigue-nasty cloaths-nasty cookery-vomit half my time…. why are we sent out here to starve and freeze?” They are dying out here of the poor conditions.
In December of 1777, American General George Washington and his men took shelter at Valley Forge for the winter. It was 18 miles northwest of the British camp in Philadelphia, and Washington thought it was a perfect spot. But that was not the case for the soldiers. The soldiers had it rough, and many did not want to enlist for the army after. Today, many people wonder if they would stay with George Washington, or not enlist and go home back to their families.
Staying at Valley Forge It is February 1st, 1778 and nearly 30 percent of Washington’s troops are ill and cannot report for duty (Document A). The Revolutionary War has been hard on the Continiental Army and after this year is over, many soldiers plan on leaving. But unlike them, I chose to stay. Tyranny, like hell is not easily conquered; yet we have this consolation with us, that the harder the conflict, the more glorious the triumph (Document D).
Soldiers that are living at Valley forge are tempted to pack up their things and leave because of the deaths and illnesses spreading through the “camp”. George Washington is the leader and he is urging people to stay and fight, having men say motivational speeches to the people. I would stay and fight at Valley Forge. The deaths and illnesses were never over 50% and the people who got sick only half of them died, I’d rather die for my freedom than die without a cause. Only about 6,887 illness records were recorded out of 20,000 people.
In the harsh, dreaded winter at Valley Forge, your enlistment has finally retired. But now there is a decision to be made. Will I stay and be loyal to the Continental Army. Or will I abandon and never look back at the Continental Army.
It says in document A that 50% of men were getting sick. With that being said, I need to stay and help them get better because the need to be able to fight in the upcoming wars. In the winter, Washington took his troops to Valley Forge, which was 18 miles from Philadelphia. At this time, Valley Forge was a difficult place to live for the Patriots. It was a struggle but if I were a Patriot in Valley Forge fighting for Washington’s Army, I wouldn’t quit. I won’t quit for three big reasons; yes I know there were a lot of sick soldiers but not as much as dying soldiers, another thing is the conditions were horrible, but there were many brave soldiers who stuck with it, and stayed with Washington, lastly I do not want to be a “summer soldier” because freedom is valuable so it is worth fighting for.
Joining the war the war can be one of the scariest things to happen to someone and can be really discouraging. During war time getting drafted is a life changing thing. “ I remember a sound in my head. It wasn't thinking, just a silent howl. ”(O'Brien, p.26)
If I am higher in rank I will get better housing, pay, and respect. Staying will improve my chances of getting promoted. With only about 4,000 out of the original 12,000 able to fight, General Washington needs every man he can get (Busch 147). The force gets smaller every day due to sickness, death, expiration of enlistment, and deserting(Busch 147, Background 141).
I Will Re-enlist The Revolutionary War caused horrible and wounding disaster and major death, sorrow, and mourning to the soldiers and many families along with them. From 1777-1778 near Pennsylvania, the conditions at Valley Forge are worsening by the day and many are thinking they can not last another month not even another day in this misery. My nine month enlistment is almost up and all I am asking myself is whether I should re-enlist. Quitting would bring my family at ease and I wouldn’t have to worry about my family getting hurt.
Hereby, I choose to stay and re-enlist at Valley Forge, for three reasons, there is a chance for me not to die of sickness because there are surgeons who can help us in medical care, there is patriotism and the Committee of Congress help them, and people are willing to fight for our freedom and be strong and courageous, as Patrick Henry says, “Give me liberty or give me death!” The first reason I will re-enlist is because there are surgeons and doctors who can help me heal when I am injured and help me get back to the war and fight again, also there weren’t many people who died in the previous war, so that proves they are good at war and fighting. As much as I want to stay and help out the army, I’ve chosen to come back home. I have been homesick and don’t want to be so cold all the time. As good as it sounds to have freedom, I rather have a warm place to stay at and nicer clothes than I have now. Lots of sickness, too much death, and terrible conditions are the reasons why I am not going to re-enlist. One reason I am choosing to leave is that there is too much sickness.
I’ve been here for 8 months, and in 1 more month I can choose to re-enlist, or go home. My decision has already been made. Although George Washington is trying his best, his monotonous words will not be enough to keep me in this graveyard. I refuse to risk my health and in all likelihood die from the sickness and disease going around camp. I refuse to starve, be frigid, live in smolder-filled huts, and remain unclothed and unhealthy.
But because of these reasons: The army needs me, my family, the hope of surviving, and the motivation as well as the inspiration, it helped me to make the right decision. My decision,Re-enlisting, overall was a good decision that every soldier should have made for the many reasons and causes. The significance of the choice of re-enlisting in my opinion is great, imagine what you would earn and create. You would earn honor and money and create a better place.
