Dehumanizing Individuals – A Huge World-wide Problem

History has shaped the world's beliefs of dehumanizing individuals in order to obtain economic advantages and to set laws for society. Much of history has led to prejudices that are still seen today. Prejudices against women, those in poverty, Black Americans, Native Americans and other minority groups still exist because of past wrongs. This is, in my opinion, the single most societal problem in the world.

Maybe the very first discrimination ever was against women. Women were not always equal to men. Back in the ancient times we learn women counted only as a mere tool or servant; they had no rights or opinions. They served only to have children and to raise them. Most women have been given the rights to vote and to be equal, however, there are still some countries where this has not happened yet. Some say minor, yet still important, discrimination against women still exists today regarding wages and equal pay? Perhaps the most tragic of world-known discrimination was the incredible horrors of Nazism against Jewish people. This was the mainly ideology of Adolf Hitler. Many early civilizations were based on the work of slaves e.g. Babylon, Egypt and Ancient Rome. After the beginning of the middle-ages slavery nearly vanished from Europe. It was not until 1853, in the USA, were slaves granted freedom (most were African Americans but some were different nationalities as well). However, in the world today slavery still occurs. In India, a special type of discrimination exists. Rank in society is primarily based on the 'caste system' in which one can only be born into not earned.
