Discrimination has been plaguing mankind since the beginning of time. Discrimination is the dislike or disapproval of someone based on the characteristics they identify with. Throughout history, regardless of the source – textbook, encyclopedia, Bible, etcetera, discrimination has been against groups of people of different races and religions for thousands, maybe millions, of years. World War II is infamous for the Holocaust, conducted by Hitler where the aim was to suppress and eliminate those of the Jewish faith. The Christian Bible has many instances where Christians were being persecuted for a few Christian individuals speaking poorly of the king. Again, using President Trump’s campaign as a recent example, Trump had declared Mexico is sending their drug-dealers, rapists, and violent criminals with few facts to support his claim. His attention quickly goes to Middle-Eastern individuals, primarily those of the Muslim belief, issuing a travel ban on all major Muslim countries. While President Trump’s discriminating beliefs usually have the lime-light, former Sheriff Joe Arpaio faced countless racial discrimination charges since 2008. Arpaio would arrest Hispanic individuals and charge them for crimes the individual did not commit. If the individual did not speak English, it is safe to assume advantage was taken of the situation. In total, Sheriff Joe Arpaio cost nearly seventy million dollars for the discrimination charges – paid for by taxpayers and the would-have-been raises of local government employees (Cassidy). In 2014, racial discrimination provided to be thirty-five percent of all discrimination charges (Catalyst Inc.). Discrimination is an ever-growing issue that will always hinder the growth of mankind as a whole.
Being human means making the best of the differences among each other. History is full of discrimination, the Holocaust, persecutions in the Bible, even events taking place today. Mankind is prone to repeat mistakes and, sadly, discrimination has not even left the picture – it seems discrimination is more of the picture anymore. Mankind is on a path of self-destruction if common differences are constantly viewed as a threat rather than a giant puzzle this world of people are working on
