Diagnostic labeling is very controversial and has both positive and negative effects. Labeling can be used for predicting a disorders future course, suggesting treatment, and prompting research for the disorder. First I will examine the negatives. People who have been labeled may often be seen as only a disorder, not a person. They may lose their identity and just become “a child with ADHD”, for example. Also, the wrong diagnostic label could be given to a person, resulting in the administration of incorrect treatment or medication. Another con of labeling is the impact it may have on the person’s reputation. The diagnosed individual may be treated differently or judged by peers after a diagnosis.
