Psychologists have been around for hundreds of years or more with the goal to aid and if possible, cure psychological ailments. Some people, however, believe that going to a psychologist and getting labeled does more harm than good. There are negatives just as there are positives to labeling or diagnosing a person, whether that person thinks of it as a label or a diagnosis is up to them. Diagnosing, or in this case labeling to some, can be an unfortunate disadvantage to those seeking guidance. Four ways labeling can be a disadvantage are as follows. First, labeling can make a person feel inadequate after learning they are under the effects of a mental health disorder. This could make the affect on the person greater as a result. Four of these advantages of diagnosing are as follows. First just by showing up and being diagnosed, a patient may feel more at ease with the situation, resulting in more confidence to get them through the ordeal. This leads to the second advantage, by the patient knowing the root of their problems regarding mental health, that patient can then seek the requirements to overcome it. This could mean more therapy, prescription drugs, or surgery. The third advantage is that if a person has a diagnosis done, that person will have a better understanding on the process needed to feel better. This means it won't be as long as trying to fix the problem without a diagnosis and won't be as scary trying to cope with a problem. Finally the fourth advantage is that in some cases the patient may find out that there is nothing to worry about at all. That being said, if there is nothing to worry about getting a diagnosis could be like lifting a weight off your shoulders. Sometimes what some people may come in thinking to be a mental health disorder turns out to be stress that in time will pass by, or even part of a person's unique personality such as being
