There are many reasons why I believe that the drinking age should be lowered to the age of eighteen. At eighteen years of age, a person is legally considered to be an adult. So, why make the drinking age twenty-one? It has also been said that at the age of eighteen the brain isn’t fully developed. In that case, then why are people considered adults at eighteen? To begin with, if at the age of eighteen people are considered adults why shouldn’t you be able to drink and make your own decisions? I believe that as an adult a person can determine when it’s a good time to drink alcoholic beverages. Here in Las Vegas, there are many clubs that are eighteen and up, but you have to be twenty-one to drink. What’s the point of this regulation? Many teens who are eighteen that do attend these clubs are going to be exposed to the alcohol. The right to be able to drink alcoholic beverages at the age of eighteen should be permitted because teens are going to find a way to get their hands on alcohol while in a club. Many teens do not know their tolerance when drinking. Teens also tend to take advantage of the opportunity to drink when alcohol is involved (Ogilvie Par6). They tend to drink more than they can handle (Ogilvie Par6). Excess drinking can take place in places that are uncontrolled and even in fraternity houses (Ogilvie Par7). These are places that promote drinking games and excessive, rapid consumption of alcohol (Ogilvie Par7). This may lead to alcohol poisoning, and can even be fatal (Ogilvie Par7). Binge drinking has increased by 56% between 1993 and 2001, and more than 90% of alcohol consumed by underage drinkers is done so while binge drinking (Register). It was stated on a Con article that,” Alcohol consumption can interfere with the development of the young adult’s brain’s (Charity).” If that’s the case then being able to get married, joining the military, and being able to vote should be moved up to the age of twenty-five after all that’s when the human brain stops developing.
