Everything about our bodies is determined in microscopic strands of DNA. It tells us what our hair color is, what shade our eyes will be and how tall we will be. It even can predict what diseases we might receive, but recently a group at Oregon Health and Science University and some of their colleagues in California, China, and South Korea reportedly successfully changed an embryo’s genetic code. They were able to repair dozens of embryos with a mutation that cause a life-threatening heart condition on August 2nd, 2017. Changing the genes in our DNA is not something only thought of in the past year. Scientists have been researching ways to change the genetic code for a few years, but not until recently have scientists been able to find a way to change the cells completely and safely. The old method consisted of changing the cells DNA after the fertilization of the egg. This method resulted in some of the cells to be repaired, and some with the unrepaired gene. The new method is to introduce the gene editing component with the sperm as it enters the egg before fertilization. This new way of gene-editing results in more cells in the embryo to be repaired. 42 of the 58 embryos introduced to the gene-editing component …show more content…

And we learned previously that there are many genetically given disorders that are passed down from the parents. This obviously changes the child's life because of their parents. But now, there is a new but still dangerous method on how to get these embryos to turn out to be healthy babies. The relevance to Health was that it talks about how babies are made and how the diseases can form throughout the process of growth. We learned that you must make sure your partner is healthy and that you do not eat, drink or do things when you are
