I do not think that we should get rid of the juvenile court system. These youth are at a critical point in their life where they can still be rehabilitated with the correct tools and approaches. It would be unfair to subject juveniles to adult court due to the fact they may not even have the mental capability yet to know what is going on, or even understand their crime, or the extent of it. Furthermore, due to not having a fully developed mental status positive change such as rehabilitation can be extremely useful. However, I know that in extreme circumstances this may be the only option. However, juveniles do not need to be locked up with adults, this would be gross negligence in my opinion to subject a juvenile in an adult prison and expect the juvenile to become a law abiding citizen upon release. They would be surrounded even in the court system with hardened criminals and this would be a horrible influence on the juvenile. …show more content…

As the book mentioned there are always changing policies and laws, and we are not at a point where all the issues are worked out however, getting rid of the whole juvenile system would result in an overflow of cases to an already backlogged adult court system. As well getting rid of the system would leave the juveniles vulnerable to harsher punishment. The juveniles would not get the same care in regards to less punitive punishment, as well as there would be less rehabilitative punishment options. These juveniles need to be treated humanely and in a matter where someone can advocate for them so that their crime may not derail their whole life and effect future education, career goals, as well as normal everyday life. Juvenile offenders need to be protected from the stigma that may be attached to them if they were transferred to adult
