Mandatory flu vaccinations are a good idea for most health care workers because they become sick easily. Health care workers who do not agree with getting mandatory flu vaccinations are losing their jobs daily because the provider they work for is trying to make them mandatory to keep their jobs. While the workers who are getting the shot not having any problems with keeping their job and are most likely paying out of pocket to get the vaccination. Flu shots should be optional for healthcare worker like they are optional for patients. This paper will discuss the pros and cons of mandatory flu vaccinations for health care workers.

The National Nurses United, recommend all members to get vaccinated (Robeznieks, 2015). The American Nurses Association updated its policy calling for all nurses to get immunized against all diseases because of a measles outbreak unless they can document religious or medical reasons for refusing them (Robezniek, 2015). Provision 9.2 is the prevention of illness and injury, this provision is supported by the nurses getting the flu vaccination because it will lower the chances of contracting the flu, being hospitalized or homebound, and missing days of work. When getting vaccinated, think about the days of work that will be missed without it. By volunteering to get the influenza vaccination, one is taking a chance at preventing nosocomial influenza transmission (Nelson, 2013). Research shows that vaccine effectiveness can vary each season: recent studies show that influenza vaccination reduces the risk of illness 40 to 60 percent among the overall population during the season when most influenza viruses are circulating the most and are well-matched to the vaccine (Gupta, 2018). The adjusted effectiveness vaccination in the current and any previous season was 31 percent in preventing admission to the hospital for non-severe influenza, 74 percent in preventing admission to ICU, and 70 percent in preventing death (Gupta, 2018). The Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America endorses a policy that required annual influenza vaccinations to be a condition of ongoing employment (Slaunwhite, 2016). When most health care workers think about getting the influenza vaccination, they think about the time, cost, inconvenience, pain, and suffering (Cortes-Penfield, 2014). Health care workers think that the health care institution should bear the financial burden of mandatory vaccination for their workers, but evidence suggests that such an investment can reduce days lost to medical leave during influenza season and is probably cost-neutral or cost-effective (Cortes-Penfield, 2014). Health care workers are being fired for refusing to get flu shots which is causing nurse unions to file guidance so that their employees will not have an allergic reaction to the influenza vaccine or any of its components, or severe adverse reaction and end up suing (Evan, 2018).
