If diplomacy doesn’t go as planned, military action may be necessary and President Trump will be the first to back this up. The last thing we want as a country is for North Korea to obtain nuclear weapons capable of striking the continental US. This is why a preventive strike against North Korea, although the success rate is low, may be the last option we are left with to denuclearize the North Korean regime. While this is not ideal, we have had success in the past with situations like this. One of the successes came with Syria in April of this year when the US condemned the chemical attacks that occurred. They showed their military strength and that they are willing to use it should Syria further provoke them. In the situation with North Korea, the US ultimately has three military options. This option would be used to show that the US is ready for war and willing to take North Korean lives if need be. This is an intriguing option because it doesn’t guarantee war but, with the threats North Korea has been making, they may retaliate to show that they aren’t messing around either. The second possible option would be “a surgical strike from the air (most likely employing cruise missiles) on key North Korean nuclear weapons and missile infrastructure” (Roy). This option would take away their missile and nuclear capabilities, at least in the short term. This would be a massive show of force by the US military but may be the best out of the three options. By using this option we will be taking away the ability, in the short term, for any North Korean retaliation and also make them think twice about striking back once they have the ability. This option could have three possible outcomes. The first being North Korea takes a step back and invites diplomacy in order to avoid any future US attacks. The second outcome could be a heavy North Korean retaliation on South Korea which could result in many
