On a school day around 9 a.m at Taft Union High School a 16 year old attending the school brought a gun to class. Ryan Heber, a teacher at the school, managed to calmly convince the shooter to put down his gun and evacuated nearly two dozen students. The 16 year old wounded two students that only received minor injuries. All 900 students were met by their parents outside of the school building within minutes of the first 911 call. And the gunman turned himself into the police. Mr.Heber is an important person for people to know because he saved so many lives. This act of bravery rightfully earned him the title of hero. We could all learn something about selflessness, or courage, from him. To be courageous, one must be both mentally and morally …show more content…
For example, When the teen started shooting people Ryan “Helped evacuate nearly a dozen students out of the school while calmly engaging the young gunman in conversation” (McCullah). By engaging the student in conversation he was able to calmly and quickly get the students to safety. Not once did Ryan start panicking. Thus he was able to get everyone to safety without causing people to panic. With staying calm he was able not only to save his life, but nearly 900 lives. Another reason why Mr.Herber is the most courageous is that he was morally strong. I know this because in the article it says “The school’s 900 students were evacuated from the building and many of them were met by parents within minutes of the first 911 call” (McCullah). For example, in the text it says “The teacher was shot with a pellet…” (McCullah). This proves that he was brave because he was facing the chance of being shot and possibly killed. Yet he was brave enough to stand up to the sixteen year old and save everyone. He risked his own life to save his students and fellow teachers. And clearly at some point he was aimed at. So for him to be able to stand up and save everyone, he had to be an exceptionally brave person. Some may argue that the baseball team is the most courageous. And why wouldn’t people think that? The team was able to come together and lift a car off a young girl. Thus saving her life, all while facing the danger of the car falling on them. But, while the baseball team saved one girl, Mr.Herber saved hundreds. Additionally, the baseball team faced little danger because there was a small chance that so many people working together would drop a car. But Ryan had to face someone who held a gun at him. Accordingly there was a greater sense of danger for
