When the topic of segregation is brought up many instantly think of the 1960s and the Civil Rights Movement. Many also think of the ‘separate by equal’ ideology that existed for years after the Supreme Court case of Plessy vs. Ferguson. Such an ideology created laws and norms to have separate facilities for people of color from whites. However, these ideologies did not just pertain to public facilities, but also within them, such as sports. In the book, Benching Jim Crow by Charles Martin, the author gives an in-depth analysis of the segregation and color lines that existed in college sports from the 1890s through the 1980s.
America and many other countries enjoy the sport of football. Fans worldwide watch and follow NFL games and all the problems that occur during games, by players, coaches, team, even fans. All fans want to see the players, coaches, and teams, be punished fairly for something they do on or off the field. But, it was noticed that the certain punishments being dealt, were extremely unfairs and are unjustified. As time went on it was noticed even more that, these unfair and unjustified punishments began to become too much for the players, coaches, team, and fans to have to see and hear about.
The article “Courts and the Future of ‘Athletic Labor’ in College Sports” by Michael H. LeRoy (a professor at the school of labor and employment relations, and college of law, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign), is written in regards to the way athletes are treated and compensation in which examples of previous court cases are used to justify how athlete benefits may be changing sooner than thought. LeRoy uses pathos to draw out and capture an emotional appeal by using examples to validate his reasoning which is obvious within the body of his text where he discusses constitutional rights, academics, discrimination and antitrust in detail. Some argue that the rule is not comprehensive enough and only requires teams to interview minority candidates without guaranteeing that they will be hired (Moore & Levitt, 2018). Critics also contend that the rule is often seen as a box-checking exercise by teams, and the lack of diversity among team owners also plays a significant role in perpetuating systemic racism in the league (Neuman, 2022). Also, according to the case, there is a possibility of teams not complying with the rule or conducting token interviews to fulfill the requirement without serious consideration of minority candidates. It is true that there is still a considerable underrepresentation of minorities in positions of leadership given the quantity of minority head coaches who have plateaued in recent years. For instance, Brian Flores claimed in a lawsuit that the NFL is run like a plantation because of the stark disparity between the racial composition of the league's players—nearly 60% of whom are black—and that of club owners, administration, and coaching positions (Neuman, 2022).
A controversial topic currently circulating throughout the media and society, is professional athletes kneeling during the National Anthem. In my opinion, this is a completely useless, unnecessary action done just for attention. The theory behind the action is supposed to represent unity. Unity is not achieved by causing controversy, but it’s achieved by coming together and supporting each other when times get tough.

NFL Players Choose to Protest During the National Anthem America. The land of the free and the home of the brave right? Well, some people including many NFL players would argue otherwise. Countless peaceful protests have broken out throughout the country and many people are shocked at what NFL players are doing to demonstrate how they feel about racism and brutality against African American people. Players are taking a knee or linking arms during the country’s national anthem.
The National Anthem is something many Americans hold dear to their hearts. When football players started to kneel instead of stand with the others as a protest, Americans started to become angry. Football players should stand for the national anthem for the soldiers, to help unify America, and to find another way to protest. First of all, football players should stand for our soldiers. Our soldiers have fought for our country and they fight for our flag.
The aim of this reports was to investigate the guiding question of ‘Should ‘booing’ be socially accepted in Australian Rules Football.’ The recent ‘booing’ saga circulating around AFL player Adam Goode’s has brought a lot of controversy over the topic of is ‘booing’ racist. Booing is defined as ‘a sound uttered to show contempt, scorn, or disapproval.’ There has been much controversy as to whether or not booing at certain events is racists. This includes the recent booing of Adam Goode’s, Serena Williams at Wimbledon, and the booing of Russia at the 2015 Eurovision.
The United States is not living up to its ideals of freedom, liberty, and justice for all no matter their race. Athletes are bringing awareness by a peaceful protest, which is protected under the first amendment for those who are oppressed. My cousin, a veteran, has also influenced my view on this situation. Seeing my own family member put their life in danger to save millions of others does not add up to someone kneeling on the sideline during the National Anthem.
The National Anthem goes on every single time before a game begins. Each time it is being sung everyone usually stands up to show respect for America. While, news said that a few athletic players that have been sitting down, while the National Anthem goes on. This keeps happening more and more slowly because those athletics don’t believe that America lives up to that potential in the song as it once represented. As well as the incidents that happened with the police of excessive force being used against people unassertively.
In this day and age, many believe racism to be an issue of the past, when as a matter of fact, it is still frequently impacting peoples lives all around the globe. Unfortunately, many issues regarding racism occur in the sporting world. In Australia, it occurs most often in Australian Rules Football, or in the major competition, AFL (Australian Football League). It is a widely accepted idea that the players and spectators of a sport, rather than the sport itself have a direct impact of inducing racism within that particular sport. Relating to the AFL, the main offenders of racism are the spectators, who are commonly abusing players of different race to them.
The United States stands as a country that represents freedom, justice, and rights given to the people. Recently, the President has publicly shamed players for refusing to stand during the National Anthem prior to their games. The National Football League has never had relations with presidential authority which gives President Trump no say in how this matter is handled. The NFL players are using their fame and platform to be the voice of many people in the country who share the same belief. Our country should stand as a free and equal place for anyone despite race, color, or gender.
In my opinion, I think/feel that the American National Anthem was sung in a disrespectful way for several reasons. In my opinion, when you are singing the national anthem, there should be a formal way of singing it. It shouldn't sing like you are at a concert. In my perspective, I thought she sounded like she was at a concert and sang to her fans. Another reason is that I notice in a section of a video when she sang apart, people giggled.
Kneeling during the national anthem is a form of peacefully protesting instead of choosing to stay silent and not have a voice. Former NFL player Colin Kaepernick who is currently a free agent brought the attention to “kneeling during the national anthem” when he decided to take a knee during a preseason game. Him kneeling brought an uproar of people who believed he was being “disrespectful” and “unpatriotic”, others believed he was being “brave” and a “hero”.
