I would think using the word “racist” when discussing the events from the 1860s and the Civil War would be appropriate. Quite frankly, there is almost no way not to use it, It was a major contradicting issue back then. How could someone state, “God himself has made them usefulness as slaves, and requires us to employ them as such,” and “Our Heavenly Father has made us to rule, and the Negroes to serve,” (Pictures of Slavery and Anti-Slavery: Advantages of Negro Slavery and the Benefits of Negro Freedom Morally, Socially, and Politically by John Bell Robinson) and it not be considered racist. This is a prime example of someone judging and stereotyping a human being just because their skin is a different color.
Northern and Southern opinions on slavery differed greatly and caused a major divide. While the South fully supported slavery, the Northern citizens were abolitionists set on dissolving the act. Northern Whigs were major abolitionists before and during the Civil War. The Fugitive Slave Act of 1850 forced all African-Americans in the US to become slaves if they were found by any slave owner, even if he was not their own. This law applied to the entirety of the country, thus making free African-Americans subject to slavery and inhibiting the Whigs from legally protecting any remaining Northern African-Americans (Document M).

The first commercial shipment of tobacco to England was in 1617 and the tobacco sold for a very lucrative price. However, tobacco was very labor-intensive crop and the colonists were experiencing a shortage of labor to grow and cultivate their crops. Land in the colonies was cheap and readily available and most colonists preferred to own and work their own land rather than working for someone else; thus the importation of indentured servants. Approximately 80% of those immigrating to the Chesapeake during the 17th century came to the colonies as indentured servants.
Indentured servants, were by all accounts, the main source of labor in the seventeenth century. The labor force was mainly needed for the newly discovery of the cash crop that was tobacco. It was a plant that need a lot of man power to be harvested and transported to port to be shipped back to England. “At first they turned to their overpopulated country for labor, but English indentured servants brought with them the same haphazard habits of work as their masters.” Indentured service being described as haphazard is an understatement; uprising.
Inhumane What is a slave? The word slave in the dictionary is as stated; a person who is the legal property of another and is forced to obey them. Many have heard the word slave before but few are familiar with the brutality and horrors slaves endured in the past and still sometimes today. Through the book Kindred, written by Octavia E Butler, the movie Roots, Incidents in the life of a slave girl seven years concealed, and the diary of a slave we are exposed to some of the gruesome and appalling ways slaves were treated. Not only are we exposed to the physical inhumanity but we also get a glimpse of the emotional expedition slaves overcame and overcome on a day to day basis.

In the year of 1860 a man named Abraham Lincoln was elected for President. Many living in the south believed that “…the election of a Republican President represented the victory of the abolitionists…” (TB pg. 304), and that they had no choice but to secede from the Union. Due to seceding states, a war broke out between the Union (Northern states) and the newly assembled southern states came to be known as the Confederate States of America or Confederacy. In 1862 after the Battle of Antietam, President Lincoln issued a document called the Emancipation Proclamation that would help free slaves.

The Abolitionist movement in the United States of America from the 1830s until 1870 was an effort to end slavery in a nation that valued personal freedom of slaves and believed all men are created equal. There were limitations of the early abolitionist movement in noting that certain political oppositions and white abolitionists did not think that African Americans or people of color should have equal rights because of their ethnic backgrounds, gender and knowledge.

Many states wanted to outlaw slavery while others adamantly defended it because it was the main institution with a high and consistent revenue. Whenever someone captures or kidnaps you and forces you to relocate against your will, it’s very human to become angry and bitter. There was no segregation when the Indentured Servants worked on the plantation, blacks and whites and treated each other as friends and then out of nowhere the segregation began and more African Americans were captured, forced to relocate, and enslaved in the United States being treated worse than animals. Slaves were beaten and murdered for anything their masters thought was worthy of the punishment. The slave owners faced legal hurdles due to treating the slaves like property.
The topic of slavery has always been a sensitive subject in American history. Due to its various proponents and opponents, it was highly debated and the tension boiled over in the early to mid-1800s. At this time in history, America was acquiring various sizable pieces of land, like Missouri, and having difficulty deciding which would become free states and others slave. As these questioned sparked arguments in the federal government, citizens began to develop their own personal beliefs - the North wanting to abolish slavery, or at the least keep northern states free, and the South wanting to maintain slavery. Many southerners defended the institution of slavery as a positive good, claiming it was deeply rooted in their history, religion, and legal system while also drastically benefitting their economy.
The Read Across America Initiative is an annual awareness program dedicated to getting children to start reading more. The National Education Association is in charge of this Initiative. On this day, kids pick their favorite book and choose to read it or it be read to them. The program is held on Dr. Seuss’s birthday, March 2nd, as a special recognition to the children 's author who inspired children to read because of his unique books. This program is conducted by teachers and volunteers at many schools and libraries across the country.
Slavery: Good or Bad? Was slavery a good thing? In the story Nightjohn, we see slavery in the perspective of the slaves. Nightjohn was a slave who escaped slavery, but came back to teach other slaves to read and write. The themes I focused on the most were prejudice, getting along with others, and freedom.
Structural effects are the conditions produced by society due to changes in spheres of history, politics, and the economy. Cultural effects are the result of the attitude and behavior of individuals toward reality, and include values. Often, they are responses to structural changes. The marriage gap between blacks and whites is due to both structural and cultural effects, but more so structural than cultural.
