When considering streaming in the education setting, one can see that there is an unequal setting or playing field. Inequality is a foundation of streaming. Students are streamed based on their academic standing, yet they are also streamed based on their ethnic, race, and social class. Students who do not have the dominant culture capital comparable to their classmates tend to be marginalized then these individuals may continue to feel and be powerless, voiceless and oppressed underclass in society. The high academic standing students are streamed into the advance classes or the academic classes where as the low academic standing students are streamed into applied or average or even lower standing classes. These students compared to the high achieving students tend to discipline more severally. This would become less if streaming did not occur. Low standing students do not have the same advantages as high standing students. There is a study in Ontario where they did not stream a grade nine English class. They put the applied and academics in the same class and by the end of the year they had found that the student’s behaviors had improved and time on task had increased for the students, and then they even found that some of the students who had started in applied were successful in getting into the academic credit. Streaming is not always beneficial for the high achieving students they can degrease in the classes they are streamed into just as much as the low achieving students can. Some students find they struggle with the advance classes but were only placed there because of their grade, their struggle not even considered.
