Sorting-Machine Model In Education

There is two type of school model. Sorting-Machine model is just one of them. I want to use this model and compare to my experience because it was similar. The sort-machine model from the book American Education is explained as a system where students are sorted by school officials base on their tracking and standardized tests. (Spring, 2013) Students are categorized in the group based on their privilege and income. They also measure the student’s academic performance through the standardize tests before placing them in the respective class standard. The top tier students continue to stay at the top, and the low remain relatively low. This is similar to my case except for that race was not a part of it. The book American Education described this as equal opportunity for all students of any race to obtain the same education and strive for success. (Spring, 2013) This is significance because the schools under this model are not dominated by a single race. The student’s success will depend on their academic performance and not base on their race preference. While in this model, students at all range of academic performance will be put together in a class. A class will, therefore, have both the low-achieving students and the high-achieving students. And because of this, there was argument that the class standard might drop in order to meet the needs of the low-achieving students. This is due to the teacher being inexperience in handling low-achieving group. It required more work in classroom management to teaching low-achieving students than high-achieving students. I can relate this situation to my experiences in high school’s Japanese class. My teacher always assigns difficult homework and quiz each day of class.
