“Some who had been successful found themselves unemployed with no benefits (Stephens and Wikstrom 164). Another issue was the fact that while some people were able to maintain their lifestyle up to that point, the minimum wage which was at that time, $5.15 per hour had not been increased between 1997 and 2005. This did not help the low-income families as during this period “…consumer prices have increased between 19 and 20 percent, meaning purchasing power of the dollar received by minimum wage workers has declines significantly” (164). One final issue that helped to turn the success of the Work to Welfare program was the fact that increases in regressive tax and sales tax, as well as state and federal government fees “fell heavily on those at the bottom of the income scale.”
During those 15 hours of hard labor, the workers would only receive 40 minutes in total for breakfast, lunch, and an extra break time” (Doc B). Waking up early in the day wasn’t their only hardship. They also had to work very hard, but only received a little for their work. These Japanese worker’s daily wage was also another cost.
The United States just elected a new president recently. This is a major event, because this is a country that values the citizens right to vote above many other rights and privileges. The months and weeks leading up to the election were very divisive and showed how humans have a long way to go before reaching a peaceful resolution of
The company wanted over 5,000 workers to come and work on the railroad, but they only had 600 on the list of payroll by 1864. (“Workers of the Central”). The ratio between 600 and 5,000 workers is a dramatic difference so the workers had to work about eight times harder and
By this, which means, that they worked harder, got paid little to nothing, and still needed to adjust for the deficiencies that were being squeezed against them since they were in actuality
It’s unfair that the workers had to work this long of a time every single day with the amount of money they
This act caused everyone to suffer from high class to low
The cuts were met with strikes and violence, but the railroads fought back with even more pay cuts, like the Pennsylvania Railroad lowering all wages by ten percent. A few months later, the same rail line decided it would double the length of all eastbound trains but kept the same amount of workers. The employees
For example, in a chart depicting the “Hours and Wages of Industrial Workers” (doc A), The average daily hours decreased
However, economic struggle occurred to due to bad investments and led to the workers’ wages being cut. The following quote is from a letter written by the president of the B & O Company: “WHEREAS The depression in the general business interests of the country continues…RESOLVED That a reduction of ten per cent, be made in the present compensation of officers and employees, of every grade.” The president of this company is cutting the wages of the workers due to the economic struggles of the country. This act caused tensions between workers and the owners of capital (president of company). The workers then went on strike: “It is impossible for the company to move any freight trains because of the open intimidation of the strikers and the attacks that they have made.”
As noted in the Canadian Encyclopedia, the urban working class was hit particularly hard by unemployment, wage cuts, and job losses. Women, too, were disproportionately affected, as they were often the first to be laid off and were paid less than their male counterparts. Indigenous peoples also suffered greatly, as they were already living in poverty and had limited access to social services. On the other hand, the middle and upper classes suffered less, as they had more resources to fall back on.
Presidential Term Limits As one of the most powerful titles in the world, presidential term limits will always be a center point of political arguments and it is my belief that the voters should be able to “write- in” a previous president after his “2-term (8 year) limit”. While proposals have been made over the years by many different people at different power levels within the government, the main goal was to keep a dictatorship from forming in America. Bryan Putney, Arthur Capper, Jeremy Paul, and Stephen C. Erickson all felt the same about the fact that term limits need to be established, but differed on what the “term limit” should be.
The jobs that women received were low-paying, and there was no guarantee that they would
Their pay was 1/10 of what normal laborers were paid for doing the same kind of task
Like the bike you bought after saving lawn-mowing money for a year, welfare reform was the prized trophy of the conservative governing philosophy. We believed that we’d found the vehicle of social mobility for poor Americans, once and for all. No one should live on taxpayer money without doing some work on their own, right? Everyone agrees, right? Wrong.
