The government shutdown in 2013 will forever be something to remember as it was something that happened to be very important. Many questions arose when the topic came up such as why it shutdown, the cost of it being shut down and could it have been avoided in any way. There is a lot of facts behind why it shut down and a lot of people do not really know the full story behind it. The government shut down in 2013 angered a lot of people, people lost pay, people got scared and worried and a lot of questions were brought up and did not all necessarily get answered. This is something that was big at the time because it lasted 16 days and was the first time the government had shut down in 17 years. People really came together and states worked very well in helping each other out. Most states are home to some sort of tourist attraction and whether that is the statue of liberty or the Grand Canyon and states did not want to see those attractions close down. People went and cut the grass and trimmed the trees at the Washington D.C. memorials all for their own appreciation. People were still honoring our veterans and nothing was going to stop them from doing so. When the college football game between Navy and the Airforce was on the way to being canceled because of the government shutdown United Airlines took over and covered the fee for the team to fly with Delta which was a final cost of 230,000 thousand dollars. New York state also covered the fee for the Statue of Liberty to remain open for the tourist that wanted to see it otherwise that would have also remained closed. “Philanthropists John and Laura Arnold of Texas spent $10 million to keep the Head Start program open in six states, helping 7,000 kids who would have been affected” (Brandon, 2013). Things like this is where everyone came together to show why there was some successful things that came out of this 2013 government
