Proposition 13, which the voters of California approved in 1978, limited property taxes to one percent of cash value at the purchase price. Another clause stated that to pass a budget and tax increase, the legislature must agree with at least ⅔ voting to approve. Some of the pros were the immediate relief it provided to homeowners upon ratification to the California state constitution. It provided a sense of predictability during the period of stagflation, and even during the housing booms and busts to subsequently follow, for residents who purchased property in years of low prices, they received the best bargain.
The proposition 13 amendment is a property tax about how taxes can’t exceed 1% of a property value. California has always had a problem with taxes due to the enormous number of illegal immigrants don’t pay taxes but use public services that are funded by taxes. This was partly solved by legalizing marijuana which made a large dent in the debt California had. Maybe these golf courses paying the correct amount of taxes would fix the tax problem altogether. Land use comes into play because everyone needs to have their property at its best use according to the taxes.
The last thing about incarcerations is there are other alternatives. That’s the another point the Smarter Sentencing Act is trying to say other than shorter sentencing times. “The 24/7 Sobriety Project is a court-based program designed to reduce the re-offense rates of repeat Driving Under the Influence (DUI) offenders. Started as a pilot project in South Dakota in 2005, the 24/7 Project requires participants to maintain full sobriety, meaning no use of alcohol or illegal drugs, in order to keep their driving privileges and stay out of jail” (). This states that anyone with a DUI or any other drug offences can seek help to stay out of jail in South Dakota.
I agree with you that Ban the Box should become a federal law as long as the law has sound guidelines. I have never worked in corrections, but I have seen instances like you described of people wanting to be incarcerated because they cannot survive. I had an individual attempt to falsely confess to an armed robbery because he wanted to go back to prison. He told me he wanted to go back to prison because he was tired of living on the streets and he had spent most of his life there. I did not spend enough time with him to determine if he was a product of not being properly supervised and not being placed in the appropriate programs or if he was given the opportunities for assistance with a job and counseling and choose not to participate.
Very good discussion Thomas, I also concur that the purpose of 'ban the box ' is to give an ex-offender a better shot at going farther in You have provided many valid points regarding the use of body cameras by police officers. Indeed that the utilization of body cameras by officers do provide transparency and accountability towards potential and suspect individual in question to include officers ' conduct. The officers must also use good judgment and with plenty of discretion when executing their legal authority to use such device. Like you also mentioned, some witnesses would be reluctant in assisting with the investigation, if they know that video cameras could potentially be release to the public that could result in retribution.
So, who can blame them in trying to hold on to the little they have? They may want to speak up, but it is their boss’s word against theirs. For that reason, the #MeToo movement was created and aims to change that, making victims feel comfortable in speaking out without fear of losing their only source of
Dumb is defined as not being able to read or write. In every generation there are changes among each generation after another to a certain extent. In today’s generation it is solely based on the uprising of complex technology being used. Past generations have only heard of writing handwritten letters by mail or only having a telephone to communicate. Now today it is about text messaging, cellular phones, emails, and etc.
NYPD has engaged in a practice known as “Stop and Frisk”. This policy allows officers, based on reasonable suspicion that criminal activity is afoot, to engage in investigatory stops and to conduct a pat down of the outer clothing of the individual if there is reasonable suspicion that the suspect is armed” (Simmons, 2014). A stop can take place with an individual that an officer considers reasonable to search based upon speculation of an encounter. For example an officer pulls over a young black man and request for his driver license and registration. The young man complies but the officer begins to speculate and assume he is carrying either illegal drugs or a concealed weapon.
Currently this happens to a large extent and causes so many people so much trauma. This happens so much that 63% of these crimes are not reported. Fortunately, a movement was started to help victims and make them comfortable sharing their story. This movement is called the Me Too movement. The basic idea is when a story of assault is shared, other victims say “me too” and share their stories.
“That’s what life is all about, isn’t it? Choices, informed decisions... what I do not respect is having my civil liberties stripped away.” , stated by Karin Klein in the short article, Ban the Ban!. One of the many values of the American life, is freedom, but to have options of what you can drink, to be taken away from you isn’t honestly moral.
Zoe Weichert Mr. Daly AP Language, 2nd Hour 10 February, 2023 Locavore Movement: Feasible or Impractical? In many places across the globe, there are communities of people rallying troops to join the locavore movement. This movement is set in place so that members of communities can band together to eat locally. Locally, though, has a different meaning to each person, community, and nation on the globe, so it can be difficult to come to a consensus on what eating locally really includes.
¨Several critics questioned why the city was making proposal on sugary drinks a priority when some city schoolchildren have no physical education classes.¨ (Washington TImes) In New York, Mayor Bloomberg placed a law on the sizes of soda citizens are allowed to get. However, this caused a lot of controversy on whether the ban was good or bad. Despite the amount of people supporting the ban´s choice, the ban does have some downsides on it. It is not a good idea to limit the amount of a soda a person can purchase (or propose the ban) because it's not applying to all, it's taking rights away from people, and itś not a big deal.
Negative campaigning has been apart of our voting for the president since the last two elections. This has hit the American people hard with the two most prominent elections the American people have faced. I do disagree with and agree with it the use of negative campaigning throughout these elections. The logic behind these elections is sound in order to sway the voter to your direction. Though this can be a good thing for a campaign or a bad thing if you exploit the truth about your opponent from their past.
Pros and Cons of Marijuana Legalization Marijuana is the most commonly used illicit substance in the United States. More than half of American adults have tried using marijuana at least once in their life. You may have read or heard stories on how marijuana use was mostly linked to people who were very vocal with their opinions. Seeing their favorite performers during a live concert may have been the start of the spreading of this illegal drug which has caused so many lives. When experts found out about the ill effects of marijuana, people who were found to be using them were put behind bars.
Is stereotyping a good idea or a bad idea in the eyes of the American people? Most American people would answer that question by saying it is a bad idea. But some people would argue that it is a good idea and has benefits. In this debate stereotyping has two sides to argue and that is whether it has benefits or has no benefits to the American people. Stereotyping has benefits such as, people can use it to identify people as people, people can use these as an example to learn from, and they can be used as a way to respond to certain situations.
