It’s an awkward social expectation. You tip for most meals even if all the server did was act like a decent human being (which everyone should do anyway). You may even wonder “Why leave a tip?” when the service was nothing extraordinary. But in the end, you still tip because you know that the server most likely depends on you rather than their employer. The current tipping system creates wage inequalities and employee disunion while promoting harassment. Therefore, restaurants should eliminate tipping. With the America’s tipping culture, restaurant owners can avoid paying a fair wage for their servers. Instead, the responsibility falls upon the customer who should just have to focus on enjoying their meal. Instead, servers work for multiple “bosses” throughout the day with no guarantee that it will pay off. In fact, the tipped minimum wage in the U.S. is only $2.13 an hour. Under federal law, employers should compensate differences from inadequate tips, but the U.S. Department of Labor reports an 84% violation rate of this regulation (Ferdman). If the concept of the tipping is based on rewarding servers, then why not reward servers with fair wages?
