Whether homework is good or bad has been a huge debate among students, teachers, and also parents for many years. There are many arguments whether it benefits the students or not and whether it is worth spending so many hours on. Many parents have two very different views on whether they believe the amount of homework that their children receive is beneficial or not beneficial. The student 's attitude towards their homework can affect how hard they try on it and how much they actually get done. When students get home from having school for about 7 hours they have to come home almost every night and do at least 1-2 hours of homework. An article called Stanford Research shows pitfalls of homework. The author, Clifton Parker says “...that too much homework can negatively affect kids, especially their lives away from school, where family, friends, and activities matter” (Parker). This shows that research has been done to prove the negative effects that homework can cause. The article also says “Colleagues found that too much homework can diminish its effectiveness and even be counterproductive”(Parker). This quote also shows that by students being overloaded with homework it can have a counterproductive side to it. For example, a student may stay up late at night trying to get all of their homework done, and then they don’t get enough sleep. They end up going to school the next day exhausted and sleep deprived and will probably have a harder time paying attention in class and retaining the information that they had learned that day. Also, students enjoy extracurricular activities, however sometimes students have to miss practice because they have so much homework that they can’t keep up with both. According to an article called why do we have homework? “homework given in advance of a particular subject can help you make the most of your classroom discussion time”(why do we have homework). This statement can be right because homework can be a good review of what students learn in school. However, students did learn all this information in school already. Also, most of the time teachers give homework that introduces new topics that students might have trouble understanding on their own. Which can lead to them getting overwhelmed and spending a large amount of time to get it done or even choosing not to do it because they don’t understand
