Legal concerns A major legal concern of Rita’s is the abuse she is currently facing. Rita has been sexually, physically, and verbally abused by her husband Jake for majority of their 15 year marriage. Rita has suffered from severe wounds and bruises. During this abuse, Jake has threated to kill her. No law enforcement have been involved or notified. As a result of the abuse, Rita has thought about suicide numerous times. She has even fantasized about killing her husband. Although she does not have a plan for either, her thoughts are potential legal concerns. Rita engages in illegal drugs and large amounts of alcohol, which significantly interferes with her social, occupational, and other important areas of functioning. These substances may impair her judgment while on the job and can be a legal concern; she is a business owner in charge of making decisions which require her to be in sound mind. A final legal concern is Rita’s affair with her business partner Sam. While in this affair, there has been an access of unaccounted money towards her business from Sam. Financially her business is prospering because of Sam’s contributions, because of it there may be future legal concerns that may arise from her having to account for this money. Rita is female in male dominated field. Not only has she attained a higher education compared to her husband, but she is also taking care of their family financially. Her husband Jake is currently unemployed. Rita is the breadwinner of the household and this makes Jake very resentful. Jake’s instability and lack of job may be a factor in him abusing Rita. Another cultural issue is Rita’s reasoning for her delay in divorcing Jake. She is fearful of divorce because of her mother’s disapproval.
