Walker was orphaned at six, married at fourteen, and widowed at twenty with a two-year-old daughter to care for. She resettled in St. Louis and went to work as a laundress. Her early years reflected patterns that were all too common for black women in her generation.
She wrote the first ever comic book introduction to ethnography and now this book is an accessible format available to all graduate students along with anyone who is interested in reading it. The book Shane, The Lone Ethnographer if nothing else was very informative and insightful. Despite not completely understanding everything the book was an overall god read and I truly enjoyed it. The insight opened me up to a whole new world that I knew nothing about
Among various volunteering experiences, McKenzie says on a typical day she goes to the Montgomery County Job Center and does nails there. Her work as a volunteer entails decorating nails at birthday parties and participating in fundraisers to raise money for nail polish supplies. According to McKenzie, the most valuable parts about being a volunteer includes all of the friendships and relationships she has established with other volunteers and as well as some of the patients. For McKenzie, working with Alanna and the Polished Girlz has impacted her as a person as it allowed her to, “be more open and receptive to the thoughts, feelings, and needs of others”. In regards to seeing a young person such as Alanna undertaking such a huge and powerful project and vision, McKenzie says, “she makes me feel inspired to start something too, but I’m just not sure what.”

During the summer of 2015, I drove to Lipscomb University’s campus with my mandatory khaki shorts and a positive attitude. I knew it was an honor that I was given the chance to attend Volunteer Girls State, but I had no idea to what extent. I grab my bags, walk to registration, and instantaneously get fixed inside a cloud of smiles, greetings, and positivity. It was almost overwhelming just how cheerful the atmosphere was, but it was tremendously refreshing. I told my mom goodbye and glanced over my busy itinerary with my roommate just before heading to the first of many Davis City meetings.

My degree is Accounting, which involves many different aspects especially communication. The three communication courses that I believe will benefit me in the long run would be: Writing for Professional Communicators, Evidentiary Speaking, and Communication Ethics. Quite frankly all of the communication classes could be beneficial in some way but these fall more along the line of my specialty. Let’s start with Writing for Professional Communicators, as an accountant I will have to document and present all of the information that I come up with for clients. This class will teach me how to communicate with clients through text my point of view just as good as if I were communicating in an oral presentation.
The two key topics in class in the last weeks, for me. Two of the most relevant topics developed in the last weeks were: non-verbal communication and the barriers to communication. Everytime we communicate with another person or group of people, we have to take into account some factors other than what we are actually saying that can affect how the message is going to be received: body language, tone, intonation, facial expressions, and others; this is what we understand for non-verbal communication. As we saw in class “55% of communication is body language, 38% is the tone of voice, and 7% is the actual words spoken.”
