Sgt. Taylor is trusted to make low-level routine decisions. He has received a letter of reprimand in which bad decision contributed to the incident. (Report not turned in and lack of directly supervising the officer). He received a second letter of reprimand for failure to follow instructions, (having officers turn in equipment combined with not turning in report, and checking on sex offender).
During treatment, the criminally insane are cared for by nurses, psychiatrists and other hospital administrators. For the treatments to be effective, the hospital staff must adapt to the way of life in the psychiatric hospital. In the article “Inside a hospital for the criminally insane” by Caitlin Dickson, posted on The Daily Beast, Dickson shares her readings of a book written by Dr. Stephen Seager about the inside of the Napa State Hospital. Napa State Hospital is home to approximately 12,000 patients and a majority of the patients are rapists, killers and mass murderers (TheDailyBeast). Everyday the hospital staff endures violence and personalities of the patients.
Touring the Glore Psychiatric Museum The fist sense that you get upon entering the Glore Psychiatric Museum is the eerie feeling that someone else is watching you. That could have been true a few years ago when the collection was exhibited in a ward at St. Joseph State Hospital in Missouri. It was known as the State Lunatic Asylum #2 until the year 1899. Most of the ill patients were treated with modern-day medicine and released.
In the History of Mental Health: Dual Diagnosis article, it states the differences between the old asylum’s treatments to today asylum’s treatments towards mental people. One of the oldest asylum is Bethlehem, located in London, and inside those walls individuals with psychological disorders were chained, whipped, and allowed to lie in their own waste (Rathus 2016). In the History of Mental Health: Dual Diagnosis article, Dorothea Dix proved to the General Assembly of North Carolina that patients within the asylum are chained, abused, and even kept in an unclean area. She also hoped for asylums to upgrade and have better treatments in the future because those patients are humans as well. Also in the article, women were treated differently because

The murderer and rapist had been unsure how he 'd play it before he 'd entered the Psychiatrist 's office, and how much he 'd reveal in his first session. Ms McMillan was the expert, and it would depend on how much she could draw out of him. However, now that he 'd arrived, he couldn 't resist teasing with his demeanour, and tone. Would she pick up on it, and the slight smirk that had passed across his features? Jarrod didn 't care; it was he paying the two hundred dollars an hour, or whatever it was, to reveal his soul, and he could do and say whatever he liked.
Mental Health has been a hot topic for many years. There have been many programs and laws put into place so that the mentally ill can get the care and treatment they need to live independently and maintain freedom in their communities. Although deinstitutionalization has occurred, the mentally ill are still being ‘institutionalized’ in our local jails, state and federal prisons. Why is this still happening if treatment and community based mental health care programs for those who suffer from mental illness are in place? Will history repeat itself; or are prisons and jails the new homes for those with mental illness in the United States?
HIPAA says that every person has the right to obtain their mental health records. In order to control the release of records you have to be 14 years old or older; that is if you under the nature of your documents. If you are under the age of 14, you parent or guardian has control over what information is released. A consumer also has to give written consent before a provider is able to release their records. When it comes to cases of psychotherapy, they are a different type of authorization.
I disagree that female offenders, and offenders in general, who are suffering from serious mental illnesses should be treated within the prison system and should instead be treated within the mental health system. No one, no matter what gender or mental illness — whether it be serious or non serious — should be treated within this system as the general environment is chaotic and unhealthy and even unhealthier for those who are suffering from general mental illness. Things such as artificial lighting and sharpness within the architecture can cause a decline within mental health as well, these things can cause mental health to decline even if the prison when they were at trial was mentally healthy. Even the labelling of someone as seriously mentally ill can have an adverse affect on their mental health, because someone has diagnosed them with something serious.
Anton was referred to a play therapist by school staff, citing their primary areas of concern being his attention deficit and uncontrolled aggression. Behaviours of particular concern included, but were not limited to: failing to concentrate and follow direction, lacking guilt in breaking the rules or hurting his peers, frequent arguing with teachers, a defiant attitude, a low frustration tolerance and sudden emotional outbursts. The play therapy adhered closely to the model taught through the National Institute for Relationship Enhancement (Guerney, 1983, 2001; Nordling, 2009) and was provided in school twice weekly during the nine-school weeks of treatment. Furthermore, the play therapy was child-centred, meaning that there was limited interference
Journal #1: My Thoughts on Becoming a Mental Health Counselor The purpose of this paper is to compare and contrast the views of becoming a mental health counselor. Although there are many professions to choose from, I decided a mental health counselor with a specialized area in women’s health and domestic violence is my true calling. Tiffany Rush-Wilson Ph. D. stated, “That if we are in this field is because we have a true passion and the seed to do this type of work” (Laureate, 2012).
Many individuals in the United States suffer from mental illness. It is estimated that approximately twenty percent of United States children and adolescents meet the diagnostic criteria for a mental health disorder (Bardach, et. al., 2014). Many of these people can be treated in an outpatient setting, such as in physicians’ offices and support or therapy groups, but some may have to be hospitalized for inpatient treatment.
Our knowledge of the human body would be limited without advances in scientific research. Discovering one missing amino acid can be the explanation of an entire disease intrigues me and exposes how remarkable this area of science is. Reading an article on the New Scientist about the discovery of an existing cancer drug, which reverses the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease, fuelled my interest. Biomedical research is evidently making rapid improvements in medical advances, as if confirmed, this is the first time a drug has worked on the causes of this disease. The interdisciplinary nature of this degree choice and the ability to divulge in a variety of approaches is what draws me in, with the opportunity of receiving a holistic understanding of
