When I was in 7th grade, I was known as the quirky black girl who wore hot pink knee high socks. I was obsessed with My Little Ponies. I loved playing the violin and I loved to mess with people’s minds with magic tricks. I remember spending hours of my free time looking up card tricks and illusions I could perform during break just so I could hear those “Andrea, how did you do that?! comments. I loved to amaze people with these tricks just as much as I wondered how they didn’t see what was in front of them the whole time. How didn’t they see me switch that card? How didn’t they see that coin in my hand before it ‘magically’ appeared under the card in front of them? In my psychology introduction class, I learned about experiments like the Stanley Milgram Experiment and the Stanford Prison Experiment that yielded amazing implications that have changed the way people think. I wanted to do the same. The next issue was what kind of research I wanted to do. To help me answer this question, I turned to the undergraduate practicum class offered by LSU. Before I could blink, I spent two and a half years working in a clinical neuropsychology lab aside Dr. Calamia and Scott, one of his graduate students. They have both taught me what it is like to work in a lab and have helped me adapt great research practices. Under them, I was able to conduct clinical interviews, administer cognitive measures and conduct data analyses. Majority of my time with this lab went toward research that looked at white noise and how it affected the cognitive prosses of an individual with ADHD. I started working on the project as soon as it was approved by the IRB. As soon as we had all the data, I was able to make a poster and present it at LSU Discover Day. I am currently working on a manuscript and working on another poster for The National Academy of Neuropsychology’s 2018 Conference. Along with these amazing opportunities, I have found a love for sociology and decided to minor in it and LGBT
