Introduction Recently it has become more evident that people with lower intelligence may have a higher risk of developing a mental illness. Research has shown that children and adolescents who score lower on psychometric tests of intelligence are at a greater risk of having contact with psychiatric services and being admitted to the hospital for psychiatric care (Gale, Hatch, Batty & Deary, 2009). Several different psychiatric diagnoses have been looked at in this context, such as schizophrenia (Gunnell, Harrison, Rasmussen, Fouskakis, &Tynelius, 2002), depression, bipolar disorder and other non-affective psychoses (Zammit, et al., 2004). Cognitive epidemiology research has looked at childhood IQ as predictors for health later in life,
I've never joined a program related to mental health, so I think this will be an amazing opportunity for me to pursue a career in mental health! I know some basics of psychology as an AP psychology student, but I hope this program will help guide me in the right direction for what specific path I wish to take. I'm also quite interested in your integrated support system, especially the workshops and college access planning! I wish to go to college, but I'm not quite sure where to go or the specifics of what to do- I really do believe this will give me the right opportunities to adjust and find the right college to suit me. I view this as a transition period from childhood to adulthood, and I'm excited to become part of a community of people
Throughout my undergraduate career, I have learned more and more about the field of psychology. I have been able to interact with the field from cognitive, clinical, social, biological, and developmental perspectives, and have quickly realized that my passion lies with clinical science. I am especially interested in investigating the effectiveness of various types of psychotherapy, as well as how this varies for different mental illnesses. For example, are some forms of therapy better for depression than for other illnesses? Perhaps there are some therapies that are actually worse for certain illnesses.
Twenty-four million seven hundred twenty thousand minutes: That is how long the average American will spend in the workforce after high school. So finding out how you want to spend those minutes is critical. Unknowingly, in 2020, I would be entering into the most trying year of my life for myself and the whole world: The outbreak of Covid 19 stopped the world. It left scars on everything and everyone.
When a young adult makes a decision about the career they plan to pursue, it is vital that the decision be based on a foundation that reflects their morals, ethics, life experiences, and overall skills. A career however, involves so much more than a paycheck - a career should be your passion. Performing arts is, and always has been something that I have been very passionate about. Throughout my schooling, grades K-12, I have been involved in many different areas of performing arts such as: Band and Theatre. Music Education as a career choice, was not a recent decision for me, but rather has been on my mind and in my heart since my earliest years.
The definition of swimming is "the sport or activity of propelling oneself through the water using limbs. " I feel like swimming has helped propel me throughout my life, by providing me with many options. It has kept me focused and competitive throughout high school, opened job opportunities and more importantly, allowed me to contribute to the community. It is something that completes me, which makes it something that completes this application. I was introduced to swimming before I was five years old but did not realize the importance of it until after eighth grade.
Having success with a skill or talent takes passion, hard work, and determination. While everyone has a passion and interest for something not everyone is gifted with the ability to perform their talents at the highest level without effort. Those who do have a natural talent for something they are passionate about are blessed. I personally feel like I am gifted in the area I am passionate about which is working with animals. I have had an interest in this area since I was 10 years old.
I have always had a passion for the culinary arts. At a young age I would experiment in the kitchen with such things as baking cakes and cooking pancakes. From this, I developed a need for more. As I got older I would try more complicated recipes such as homemade pasta and meatballs or pizza made completely from scratch. I got these ideas from the Food Network mostly, and some from old family recipes.
Throughout the journey of life, decisions grow increasingly more complex and require extra forethought. Starting from childhood, I always knew what my next step would be; Elementary to Middle School, Middle School to High School. Unfortunately, the comfortable predictability ended when I graduated twelfth grade. My next step was no longer a given, and I was required to make the first real decision of my life.
I want to study sound engineering as Sound technology is always evolving and this has interested me. I see this course as being integral to my future and will elevate and give me the necessary knowledge and tools required to help me achieve my goals. From an early age, music has been a prominent part of my life. As I got older I became more inquisitive about how music was created, from the recording process, the science and technology involved. My fascination with music technology grew so did my ambition.
I have always been interested in the fascinating way that software is presented. Since a young age I was always the first one in my family to be able to fix the glitches on or virus-infected laptop/computer. Computer science links with the two most important subjects to me. I study BTEC computing, therefore have learnt that this is what I want to do and also that it is what I love the most. As for science, it was the highest performing GCSE for me.
Academically, I have always been a very determined and studious individual. I have a broad interest in many subject areas yet feel drawn towards a business course. Business to me is about overcoming challenges and working hard. Many experiences in my own life have reflected these skills, such as being hospitalised during my AS exams, which made me determined to manage my time efficiently so I could complete my A levels and create options for my future. I want to study Business at degree level because of the complex yet intriguing nature of the topic.
As Charles Darwin said, “It is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent, but the ones most responsive to change.” I feel that in a world where the markets are changing rapidly, we need to be able to adapt and grab a hold of opportunities that come our way. Throughout high school I have thoroughly enjoyed studying Business Studies as it has enabled me to understand how different organizations work.
My interests for the implications of human behavior were found during my first psychology introductory course during freshman year of college. It was not until I enrolled in a Brain and Behavior course that I learned I was only scratching the surface of what I know now is my passion for psychology. My personal interest revolves around the possibility to monitor and track neuronal behavior and how that same behavior works in a circuit feeding off neurotransmission, ending in physical behavior. Furthermore, how that process can serve in preemptive measures in helping ameliorate many child mental disorders. This aspect of psychology truly sparks curiosity in my academic life leading me to want to go further than theory.
