Once I graduated with my master’s degree, I thought that was the end of school for me. My plan was to take the NCE, begin my supervision hours, and work in my field. I accomplished all of those things, but I still felt inadequate. I felt as though something was missing. I felt as though I was not pushing myself to reach my full potential. I sat down and began to think about my purpose and I asked myself some questions. What is your end goal? Who do you want to help? How are you going to help these individuals? After answering these questions, I decided that I need more education to accomplish these goals. I want to become a professor or advisor, open a non-profit organization that helps troubled teens, and I want to go into private practice …show more content…

No one in my immediate family obtained a college degree outside of community college so I did not have much guidance in that aspect. Once I was enrolled in college, it was my professors and advisors that assisted me with navigating through my journey and I want to be able to be that same positive guidance for young adults.
During my graduate program, one of the requirements was to participate in counseling and it was one of the best experiences of my life. Experiencing counseling first hand reassured me of my purpose. I truly believe that counseling can heal wounds, give new perspectives, and bring people closer together; which is exactly what I hope to accomplish through private practice. I am very passionate about family and keeping families together because I’ve experienced hardships within my own family so in return I want to assist others with keeping their family together.
My personal experiences are the reasons behind my research interest which is the stigma of counseling within the African American community. I am also interested in looking at females growing up without a positive father figure and the affect it has on intimate
