Correlation Between PTSD and Substance Abuse Trauma can often be overlooked as the root of someone’s addiction. People can be unaware of what lies in the roots of their biology. Having traumatic events happen to them, can trigger post- traumatic stress disorder, to some people they just want to forget it all. Unfortunely, in a lot of cases taking drugs to forget can lead to substance abuse and addiction. In fact, that’s what the article “The correlation between trauma, PTSD, and substance abuse in a community sample seeking outpatient treatment for addiction” touches on. In short, the article written by Kuksis, Di Prospero, Hawken, and Finch (2017) objective was “undertaken to investigate the relationship between the severity of life trauma experienced, post-traumatic stress disorder, and the severity of addiction in a Canadian population seeking outpatient treatment for substance use disorders(SUD).” They used 132 participants who filled out several different surveys. The first way is the method in which the authors collected their data. In fact, we learned about this scientific method in chapter 1. Surveys and questionnaires were used to collect all pertaining data. In chapter 4 we briefly discussed in class about substance abuse and touched on the different types of drugs that are out in the world these days. In fact, once I get my degree I might just have to go back to ‘drug’ school to keep up with what people are putting in their systems. The final way I can relate this article to class is in chapter 6.
