Public Health Major Personal Statement

Health is a word that resonates with me, because it can mean so much more than its simple dictionary definition. Health is more than just being free of illness, but involves an individual, his/her community and how various factors influence, contribute or take away from that individuals’ health and well-being. I hope to one day pursue my goal of studying medicine, and I believe that the curriculum of the Public Health major will equip me with the skills and knowledge to be the best health professional I can be. To be aware of the environmental and social situations of a patient will allow me to pursue what I want with my career, not just curing disease or illness, but to do my best to better their quality of life. The BS pathway includes courses that are also prerequisite science courses for medical schools, as well as many other post-graduate health professional programs. I would have to pursue the BS option over the BA option because of the overlap with these prerequisites. Through my experience in Running Start, I was fortunate enough to get a taste of college during my last two years of high school. It allowed me to get some prerequisites done, as well as prepare me to be successful here at the University of Washington. With the experience at my community college also came a learning curve and a realization in me. I did not perform nearly as well at the college as I did during high school, and I realized that nothing would be as easy as I thought it was. I had to change the way I approached school, and that just adds to my work ethic and drive towards my education. After completing my second quarter here at the University, I am getting more comfortable, and know that my success here at the University can only come from my hard work and efforts, and I am prepared to work hard, to perform well for the major and for my health prerequisites. However, I do not suspect that I will be graduating early, despite all the additional credits that I have, so that I can continue to focus on my pre-health and my major
