According to Healthy People 2020, Alzheimer’s disease was the 6th leading cause of death, in all ages, in 2013. Alzheimer’s disease in one of the most common forms of dementia (Healthy People 2020.) Dementia is the loss of cognitive functioning such as thinking, remembering, and reasoning. It is to an extent that it interferes with a human’s daily life. (Healthy People 2020.)
From getting an indigent patient’s medical bills paid to educating a patient about a disease process so they could make the right medical decisions to teaching a colleague through understanding a difficult work process and so forth. The Healthy People 2020 mission statement: To improve health through strengthening policy and practice, Healthy People will: • Identify nationwide health improvements priorities; • Increase public awareness and understanding of the determinants of health, disease, and disability and the opportunities for progress; • Provide measurable objectives and goals that can be used at the national, state, and local levels; • Engage multiple sectors to take actions that are driven by the best available evidence and knowledge; • Identify critical research and data collection needs. (Healthy People, 2017) The Healthy People 2020 mission statement outlines how the program hopes to improve health through strengthening policies and enhancing practice across the United States. The program identified 26 objectives to focus on as important health issues. As of 2014, data shows that 14 out of the 26 indicators have met their target or shown improvement (Healthy People, 2017).

Three changes that I think that would contribute most to improving the health of people in the less developed nations is changing “income inequality,” having an equal health care among everyone, and changing the education system (Weitz 2017:52). By changing income inequality to be more equal among everyone, this should put people in the same socioeconomic status in which everyone can afford the same things like food, housing, health care, and education. I am applying to a CFHI Global Health Education Program as part of my practicum experience. I am currently a pursuing my Master’s in Global Health at Northwestern University and will engage in four weeks of non-clinical work in a health delivery setting as part of my practicum course. A CFHI program will allow me to grow professionally and personally. This program will provide me with a practical fieldwork experience that will complement with I have learned through the different courses for my Master’s program. I am also applying to obtain a global health experience and have an ethical, professional, and personal development by learning, understanding and developing different skills such as leadership, teamwork, cultural competence, problem-solving skills, and service orientation.

I am a firm believer, that god will not give me or anyone anything we cannot handle. Life is hard sometimes, nothing is easy and perfect but when life gets hard I get harder. Every human being on earth has the potential to grow and flourish into the person they were meant to be. It is my job as a health educator to help inform people about health and wellness. I believe health is an ongoing process, it is a journey from the time one is born until he or she is deceased.

Health is a word that resonates with me, because it can mean so much more than its simple dictionary definition. Health is more than just being free of illness, but involves an individual, his/her community and how various factors influence, contribute or take away from that individuals’ health and well-being. I hope to one day pursue my goal of studying medicine, and I believe that the curriculum of the Public Health major will equip me with the skills and knowledge to be the best health professional I can be. To truly be healthy, they must take into account the three main elements that make up health. A health triangle can help a person achieve a state of well-being, for the triangle has the necessary parts for leading a healthy life. In order for a health triangle to be effective in one’s life, the person must understand what it is and how it works, and how to balance out and improve their triangle.

Health and social care is something that I have always been passionate about. Because I have studied health and social care for the last four years I have regularly met a lot of the most vulnerable members of society through past work experiences. Through past placements I have worked with children who have special needs. This helped me develop ways of communicating with the children this could be through sign language. Because my Aunt is deaf I have taught myself basic sign language in order to communicate with her effectively.
