I think the objectives set forth in Healthy People are a step in the right direction. They set goals that may not always be reached 100% but they are realistic and attainable. They always show improvement in areas that need work. However, there are some discrepancies that definitely stop the progress that Healthy People has set forth.
* Health defined: "Passive health symbolizes wellness and absence of disease. Positive health is rhythmic consistency. The life process evolves irreversibly onward along
Health is viewed as a part of the whole, is variable and teeters between synchronization and disagreement. Nurses depend on theories and models to promote healing, well-being, and mindfulness when providing care for individuals and interacting with
In the Wellness Workbook: How to Achieve Enduring Health and Vitality, Travis and Ryan (2004) share their thoughts and philosophies on wellness. Their ideas include taking care and maintaining our bodies, clearly expressing emotions, building and nourishing relationships with others, and being aware of our psychological and spiritual presence. Travis and Ryan (2004) provide a great example: they explain that a person who is in top physical condition does not necessarily mean that they have achieved high-level wellness. They could be overwhelmed and full of stress in their home and/or work environment; they are most likely facing premature death on the wellness continuum. If a person is suffering from an illness or is dealing with some type of disability and are working towards having the best life possible, then they are most likely facing high-level wellness on the continuum.
In the healthcare field, the definition of health occupies multiple meanings such as; • The condition of being sound in body, mind, or spirit. • Freedom from physical disease or pain. • Condition or state. • State of complete physical, mental, and social well being To me, the definition of health means more than just the absence of disease. The definition of health includes all aspects of emotional, physical and nutritional balance.
The Healthy People 2020 initiative gives 10-year national objectives for improving the health of all Americans. These objectives are to be met by the year 2020 (healthy people reference). The vision of this health initiative is to help create a society where people live long and healthy lives. People, as defined in the Health Promotion Model (HPM), are organisms shaped by their environment that also have the ability to shape
Philosophy Paper I believe in the philosophy of trying to live leaving the world in a better place and looking for daily opportunities to do so. I value efforts with a ripple effect, in which one action can create many positive responses. These ideas parallel with my philosophy of health education and promotion to help individuals achieve optimal health, specifically related with behavior change and decision- making philosophies. My life philosophy influences my philosophy of health education because they share the same common goal and purpose, which is improvement and betterment.
World war 2 is the greatest and largest war to ever occur in human history because of 2 big reasons, more money was spent on world war 2 than any other war before it, and the number of casualties in world war 2 is greater than any other war before it, adding up to around an estimate of 75 million human deaths. World War 2 is considered one of the biggest turning points in history. Many people contributed and sacrificed for the sake of the war. Companies converted their factories so that they could create anything from weapons or military vehicles like tanks to warplanes. The total cost of just 4 years of the second world war between 1942-1945 was a shocking amount of $321,000,000,000.(Britannica.)
First, we are clinicians to which these patients seek for our expertise to address their health problems. Secondly, we are diagnosticians whereby we seek the underlying causes of our patient’s health issues. Third, we are educators to which we help our patients cope and understand their health conditions. And lastly, we aspire to be the catalyst for a positive change in our patient’s concept of wellness and health. And truly, when we achieve our roles as catalysts for change for our patients we exude the transformative power of physical

I learned throughout the course of this class that there are many components to maintaining a state of well being and that health and wellness aren’t the same thing. I came to understand better the multiple categories of wellness that compose the broad subject in general. We also discussed the various attributes of physical wellness that range from the strength of the heart to the flexibility of our joints. There was a great deal of information that came from this class that will be beneficial to have in the future as it gives multiple tips to keeping oneself in a state of homeostasis. Nutrition and stress management are also huge factors within the balance of things as well.
In short, the biological model of health is mainly defined from the absence of disease, from the model that is well-matched with positive meanings in relation to balance of normal functioning. The social model health is actually a positive state of well-being and wholeness linked with however this is not mainly explained from the non-existence of disease, physical, mental impairment and illness (Gross, 2010). Overall the concepts of ill health and health are not balanced. Non-existences of disease might be part of health, however health is considered more than the “absence of disease”.
I have chosen public health as my major because it is a dynamic field. I have a passion for making a difference in people’s lives and helping others achieve their goals. It is with great passion that I am dedicated and willing to contribute my service or skills to help someone in need. My philosophy of health education is very simple, to prevent, improve and educate the lives of individuals, families, communities, populations, and societies. Besides, there is no safer way to touch people’s lives than through public health.
My philosophy of health is that it is a state of wellbeing, in which a person can function independently, and it does not necessarily mean it is the absence of an illness. This is similar to how the World Health Organization (WHO) defines health within the professional nursing text. In my opinion, health is more about the quality of life that can be provided. How a person experience of health in their environment, or absence of health, can be considered a reflection of the whole person, which connects the metaparadigm concept of health firmly with the metaparadigms of person and environment (Marchuk, 2014). My belief is that nurses should consider all a patient’s subsystems and the environment in which they live into to determine if the patient may be able achieve health as defined in our textbook.
When exploring what is health, it looks at the idea of an individual being free from illness or injuries (World Health Organization 1948). WHO further explains that it is the state of complete: physical, mental, and social well-being and not the absence of disease or infirmity (health context, 2018) In 1986 during Ottawa Charter for Health Promotion, WHO said health is a resource for everyday life, not the objective of living, also is a positive concept emphasizing social, personal resources, and physical capacities. There are different aspects that contribute and impact a person’s health such as their: family and friends, education or job, body, spirit and mind, and all these need to balance to ensure good health (health context, 2018).
