These schools are designed to establish a minimum education threshold at each school. The San Antonio District in the representation of families residing in poor districts challenged this funding scheme by arguing that students were disadvantaged because their schools lacked the property used by other districts, and academic programs receiving government funding should favor all students equally. Not many English and Language Arts classes use contemporary novels and literature as part of their curriculum. Speak, by Laurie Halse Anderson, is a novel that has been and continues to be used in classrooms throughout the country whether it is in middle school or high school. This novel discusses issues that adolescents face in high school, which can help prepare early adolescents for what they need to know. The novel portrays real challenges that adolescent’s face. It presents an honest, real portrayal of experiences that occur in adolescence.
Children who grow up in poverty are faced with a series of issues which impact their education and social atmosphere. In both the school and home setting these children lack the proper resources which they need to succeed academically. Across the country, people have begun creating programs which aim to help children in poverty succeed, despite their socioeconomic status. These programs range from after-school reading, tutoring services, charter schools, and free summer programs. All of these programs provide children with extra academic help which they may not be receiving in school or at home.
Broad Brook Elementary is a diverse Preschool through 4th grade school. Per report from Ms. Foxx, the current Broad Brook School principal, in the 2013-2014 school year Broad Brook Elementary School had a highly functioning School Governance Council (SGC) but lacked a Parent Teacher Organization (PTO). The intent of the SGC at Broad Brook Elementary School is to engage with families and community members and dialogue about overall student achievement, with all that is encompasses. In the 2014-2105 school year the PTO began to resurrect with new parent membership and with a dynamic PTO president. Progress was noted with family events being organized and parents began engaging.
Everyday, she excels in her job of caring for the children and making a difference in the community. Due to her kindness she would always bring thoughtful gifts for the children. She doesn 't have to do the classes with the children everyday but she continues to do it like Sylvia says “school supposed to let out in the summer I heard, but she dont never let up” (Bambara 96). The lessons learned while earning her degree has lead her to becoming a positive role model in the children 's lives; nonetheless, teaching them lessons that may never learn from others. She shows her passion in the story by saying “she said, it was only her right that she take responsibility for the young ones’ education.
Why is it that we forget certain memories yet remember others so vividly? In the poem “The Myth of Music” by Rachel M. Harper it can be seen that the author implies that the relationship between music and the complex memories of her family is that music can bring back the memories that she otherwise could not remember. This can be observed in the author’s use of imagery in the poem. Harper uses imagery in the poem to reveal that music helps bring back forgotten memories of her family. This can be seen when the author gives an example of this exact situation occurring.
Charter Schools are public schools who operates independently to the terms of a contract or charter that can last up to five years. They are governed by nonprofit boards of trustees who are responsible for establishing school policies and compliance with state and federal law. Charter schools differ to public schools in setting their own codes of discipline, promotion criteria, and policies. However, both public and charter schools must comply with State and Federal laws as it applies to education.
The ideal model of schooling for young adolescents is the middle school model. The middle school model allows for a smooth transition from elementary school to middle school. The model also takes into consideration the developmental needs of adolescents. The middle school model best fits the uniqueness of the young middle school learner.
All of the readings explain how schools are working organizations that have multiple parts it needs to successfully run. Reading 18, organizing schools for improvement, corresponds what the video was saying about the quality of education students are receiving. In the video, he says that the role of a teacher is to facilitate learning, and teachers should spark the curiosity of the child. Teaching is a creative progression, and great teachers are supposed to mentor, stimulate, provoke, and engage the students. The reading points out that engaging pedagogy afforded students active learning roles in the classrooms, and good teachers advance high-quality instruction.
