Upon high school graduation every student is faced with decisions that could potentially dictate their entire adult life. There are about three choices to choose from after graduation either join the military, find a job trade, or further your education and go to college. Today the push is for every student to attend college, whether it be a junior college or a university. Choosing a college even breaks down further into whether to attend a public or private college. Each person will favor something different while choosing, it’s all personal preference. When comparing private colleges to public colleges the main differences will be class sizes, campus demographics and tuition costs.

For a lot of families the cost of tuition and how they are going to pay for can be a huge problem. Public colleges are mainly funded by state government making them seem like a good choice because their low tuition costs. A lot of people rely mostly on their FAFSA (financial application for student aid) and scholarships to pay most of their fees if not all. Since public schools are government funded they can only reward as many scholarships as they can with what money they government gave the school. Meaning most scholarships from public colleges run on first come, first serve basis. Private colleges, on the other hand, are funded heavily by donations, private contributions, and tuition. Since private colleges do not have strict amounts of money to go by they can award much larger scholarships to students to help pay for tuition. Private college’s tuition does indeed tend to cost about 3 times as much as a public school’s tuition, but most students that attend private colleges are on scholarship given by the school.
