Puerto Rico Statehood Did you know that Hawaii and Alaska were both in poverty before they became states? Did you know that now they have poverty rates below the national average? At the moment, Puerto Rico is living in poverty and has been suffering since the drastic 2008 financial crisis. We, as a united people, can help Puerto Rico. The only way we can help them is by making them a state. Making Puerto Rico a state will assist in bringing them out of poverty, create a stronger economy for their government, and even make the residents of Puerto Rico happy. After you think about it, what could be bad about having a 51st state? First of all, Puerto Rico is knee deep in poverty. The territories of both Alaska and Hawaii, as stated earlier, were both deeply impoverished until they became united as states. If Puerto Rico follows the same path, their monetary troubles would no longer be a problem. In addition, Governor Alejandro Padilla has already admitted that their colony cannot pay off the debt that they owe. Overall, making Puerto Rico a state will benefit them by bringing them out of their currency conundrum. …show more content…

With the federal support that is provided to states, Puerto Rico would have a chance to improve its infrastructure in ways that would draw employers to the island. This would allow Puerto Ricans to build businesses, too. Also, creating a better economy can help increase safety which would keep Puerto Ricans from leaving their home for the mainland of United States, and would bring people from the U.S. to the soon-to-be thriving Puerto Rico. This would help with the problem of an aging population which looms over the colony now. In the end, a better economy would create a more stable community for the people Puerto
