What Are The Best Weapons In Roman Culture? There was a plethora of useful weapons during the Romans reign in the world. Weapons such as the Gladius, the Scutum and the Pilum were all very important weapons for the Romans. The Gladius was the Romans' take on a small sword that was effective as a close range weapon. The Scutum was their form of a shield, and the Pilum was a javelin used for long range combat. There is a lot of evidence about why these 3 weapons were very important in Roman culture. This blade is much more practical than a long, heavy sword that moves much slower than a blade like the Gladius. As previously stated, the Scutum was the Roman version of a shield. Based on the shield held at Yale University, the Scutum was made of wood and rawhide. As expected, this was very important for Romans to defend themselves on the battlefield. Paired with a Gladius and a Pilum, the Romans had a deadly selection of weapons to use. The Pilum was also crucial for Roman soldiers to use. Despite already having other weapons at their disposal, they also used a Pilum which was their version of a javelin or spear. These were excellent long ranged weapons compared to the Glatius and Scutum which served different purposes. There were thick and thin types of the Pilum which were differently built. Soldiers carried both types with them. All of these weapons were equally important, and they all served their own separate purposes.
