Puritan Refugees

113 Words1 Pages
In 1620, 100 Puritan refugees left England in search of not only religious freedom but also economic enterprise. They accidentally sailed into Cape Cod Bay in Massachusetts. Upon arrival, they found cleared land ready for seeding, left by the previous tenants who died due to foreign diseases. The Half of the Pilgrims perished during the first months after their winter arrival. Soon after, they were lucky enough to meet an Indian named Squanto who taught them how to utilize the land and sea. After time, these separatists were able to survive and develop socially, agriculturally and economically. The first years of life were run similar to a commune, everything owned and maintained jointly.
