Purnell’s Model of the 12 elements influencing culture applies to all people of every culture. These elements are evident in my cultural upbringing, as well as the cultures I was exposed to as a child. However, some of these cultural elements will pose a challenge in my future career as a nurse. Overview/Heritage: The first concept of Purnell’s Model for Cultural Competence is overview/heritage. The overview/heritage of a person is based off of their country, current residency, political views, economic and educational status, and their occupation (Purnell). My heritage is rooted in America. This concept in Purnell’s model is about gender roles, family roles, and child-rearing practices. This concept also applies to social statuses and views on alternative lifestyles (Purnell). I was raised in a conservative, Christian household where family roles were based off of gender stereotypes. My mother stayed at home to take care of the cooking, cleaning, and five children while my father worked and brought home the bacon. According to Purnell, “Workforce issues include concepts related to autonomy, acculturation, assimilation, gender roles, ethnic communication styles, individualism, and health care practices from the country of origin.” Although I don’t currently undergo many workforce issues such as autonomy, acculturation, and assimilation my job does face issues with ethical communication styles. When there is server error, such as submitting an incorrect order our boss tends to be pretty harsh with his words. I have had several encounters with my boss yelling at me and by no means has that ever made the situation any better. When it comes to hiring based on looks I would say like most restaurants/bars our owner tends to hire more attractive
