I agree with David Leonhardt’s claim that having a college degree can benefit you through a career. Having a degree pay more than a high school diploma. Families expect their children to have a future with a good paying job and a degree that can last for a life time.
Can the pursuit of a higher degree change your life? If you answered no then maybe you would benefit from reading Andrew Braaksma article “Some Lessons from the Assembly Line.” When this article was produced Braaksma used his work to win a contest named Back to School, while he was a junior at the University of Michigan. Braaksma also worked his summers at an automotive plant in southwest Michigan where he learned some valuable lessons not taught in the classroom. Anyone thinking about returning to college or students of any age should understand the importance of higher education because the reality of working for a living is harder than you think, the physical toll’s it can place on the body, and lack of a job security that comes from not having a higher education.
When acquiring a college degree you benefit greatly. The pay you get at any job will be raised if you have worked for a college degree, some jobs won’t even look at your resume if you don’t have a degree. Many people chose not to go to college, but roughly about 1/3 of high school students continue their education at college. Overall you get a higher job satisfaction if you have snagged a college degree. I would much rather be looked up to, rather than looking up to someone who has continued their education.
