After reading this essay extensively, I can say that I agree with Paxson, simply because I am bias to the arts. I grew up with a cousin publishing three books before the age of eighteen, a mother who could spend days in the theatre, and a father who relieves stress by strumming his guitar. I myself have participated in theatre and choir. I have gained many skills from both theatre and choir that some would argue have nothing to do with either. In choir, math is required to keep rhythm and to know how beats to hold a note.
These two different yet similar pieces combine to persuade viewers that all scholars should learn about the arts. Although both writers share a strong view point of everyone being educated in the arts and both incorporate strong uses of logos and pathos in their writings, Ungar’s article shows great usage of ethos while Murray’s essay lacks in that element. Ungar and Murray both incorporate a valid basis of logic stating how important it is to know as much about liberal-arts as possible grounded with factual information. Ungar assimilates the logical reasoning with his own personal views of how advantageous studying the arts in college are supported with research from actual heads of corporation. Ungar goes on by proclaiming the liberal arts as the best choice to qualify for a career education with validation from a president.
The Federal Theatre Project was a New Deal plan, administered by the Works Progress Administration (WPA), during the Great Depression. The FTP came about during the height of the Great Depression, 1935, only four years before the Depression came to an end. The Great Depression has been referred to as the greatest economic disaster in the United States and lasted from 1929-1939 (history.com). During this time, nearly 13 million Americans were unemployed (history.com). The FTP was administered by the WPA in hopes to send many unemployed theatre professionals back to work.
Despite my passion for athletics, I have spent the majority of my high school career involved in show choir. I participate in the Executive Session at Sauk Prairie High School. Show choir incorporates training under professional choreographers, undergoing numerous voice lessons, and traveling the country for competitions. This self-disciplinary activity pushes me to work hard and strive for perfectionism while taking leadership roles in a professional environment. Furthermore, show choir allows me to impact others through my performance and to take risks.

These experiences promote the values of universalism and specificity (respectively).”

Due to those factors, I wanted to be an otolaryngologist specializing in laryngology. I thought this way I could get somewhat close to my passion of singing while raking in the prestige and cash. So then I decided to apply to schools with strong pre-med programs, but I also kept in mind my love for music, resulting in me applying to numerous liberal arts colleges.

I have been involved in music since I was five years old, starting out with piano, and then moving on to guitar and voice. I started thinking seriously about a music career after I attended International Music Camp in the seventh grade.
Many people dream of performing on stage, being a part of brilliant performances and productions. I, on the other hand, dream of working behind the scenes, and of being a part of the team that makes these performances and productions possible. Most people never would consider Centre, Alabama, a small sleepy Southern town with a laid back atmosphere that could put an incurable insomniac to sleep, home to a thriving community theatre. Theatre Centre provides entertainment, wonder, dread, and happiness for all who witness it. I have loved and adored the theatre ever since I was a small child, performing in every play I could. Standing on stage fills me with a sense of pride and happiness that can be found nowhere else in the world. I love theatre, and even though the theatre I love more than any other thrives in a small town in Alabama, I still have a wonderful experience every time I go.
“All the world’s a stage, and all the men and women are merely players,” (Shakespeare), meaning the whole world is like a stage show and humans are the actors. The quote proves that life can imitate art even when it’s not recognized, art is everywhere you look, in places you never thought to look. Theater is represented in any imaginable way, so why is it not good enough for a simple required subject in school? Fine arts such as drama, dance, and art programs get cut from high schools due to the expenses that go into them. People say theater is not needed for the future, no help in the “real world”, and it’s not a life skill.
