Support involves relationships with family, friends, and communities which provide assistance, affirmation, and feedback (Anderson et al., 2012). Utilizing this methodology allows the researchers to be able to examine a larger population of postsecondary student data for in-depth result analysis. Therefore, the present study employs a quantitative cross-sectional approach using a survey to assess the impact of veteran student background on transition into higher education.
A survey will be constructed and piloted by a sample of student veterans not eligible for the study. The survey will be used to answer the research question: How does prior military service relate to a student’s ability to successfully transition into college? The 4 S’s in Schlossberg’s Transition Theory identified in previous studies will shape survey question development and coding for open-ended questions. A link to an electronic survey will be distributed by email to students receiving educational benefits from the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) or Hazlewood Act. Students that are receiving benefits as dependents (non-veterans) will be excluded from this study. Identification of veterans and service members can also be achieved through a question on the admissions application.
