The current research study will aim to find out the relationship between child abuse and academic performance in children. Why there is little awareness on the implications of child abuse? What steps can be taken by teachers to safeguard the rights of children in the school setting? What are the effects of child abuse on the mental health of children? What are the policies that could be taken to protect children from child abuse? This research will aim to find answers of all of these questions. The child abuse correlates with the academic performance so that steps should be taken to ensure child protection policies in schools so that children can give their attention and focus on their academics. Due to prevalence of abuse cases in the country …show more content…
Dlamini and Makondo (2017) conducted a study with the aim to explore the relationship between child abuse and academic performance on the school learners. The researchers basically used the phenomenological research design. Semi-structured interviews and focus group discussion along with data analysis were the methodology used. The research findings revealed that majority of the abused students underperformed in their class which in turn affected their academic performance badly (Dlamini & Makondo, 2017). The phenomenology methodology was the biggest strength of the research because it let the respondents to express their feelings and problems subjectively. The researchers used open-ended questions for the assessment of data. The close-ended questions do not let the participants express their suffering in detail. To ensure the safety of the children it is first needed to find the details of the child and that was done through open-ended focus group discussion in the above mentioned study. Focus group discussion was useful to obtain the personal opinions and perceptions about the child abuse they were suffering from. On the other hand, the researchers own skills and research biases could easily influence the research findings. Other than this, the small sample size might not be a good representation of the larger population and the generalizability of the results was low. The focus group was held together with everyone so the respondents might feel pressurized to give similar answers to that of the moderator or to confirm with the group fellow respondents. The focus groups are much expensive to execute and a skilled research moderator would be essential to conduct it. The current study of finding relationship of child abuse and academic performance could be done by mixed method approach incorporating both of the qualitative and quantitative methods. A phenomenology could be explored of child abuse responses to assess the
