The Qualities of Friendship Great friends have great qualities. I think the qualities of friendship that matter most to me are courage, loyalty, and intelligence. Many characters in the story "Where the Red Fern Grows" have these qualities. However, I believe that Little Ann has these qualities the strongest. I will show you how. Little Ann is very courageous. She is a very small dog; she was most likely even the runt, but she can fight. She helped Old Dan Fight the coons multiple times. For example, when the mountain lion was trying to hurt Billy, and Old Dan was taking the hits, Litlle Ann was biting and scratching the mountain lion as hard as she could. Even when there was a blizzard she did everything she could to the coon in the tree.
