In 1517, Martin Luther nailed his 95 theses to the door of the Wittenberg Castle church, sparking the reformation and the entire church we know today. This separation from the Catholic Church wasn’t taken great by everyone, and it led to 50 million lives, both protestant and catholic, to be lost. (TheTrumpet 2016) Queen Mary 1, or “Bloody Mary” was one of these rulers that incited and encouraged this violence against the protestants. Queen Mary 1 was born in 1516, two years before the reformation started, and had a rough life. Since she was two she was tossed around in the political power game of marriage and she never eventually married. Her father disliked her and tried to smear her name and image, and once her father died, her nine-year-old step brother, Edward, came into power. He was a protestant, Mary was a Catholic. Her cruelty did not come from inhumanity though. She was generally seen as a nice caring person and helped the poor quite a bit. The reason that she killed so many people is that she thought that the reformationists were a radical threat that needed to be dealt with. One of the members of King Edward's courts abolished the heresy laws, or the laws that allowed action to be taken if you were against the Catholic Church. Queen Mary 1 reinstated these laws through parliament. (Mary 1 1912) John Rogers was the first man to be executed for heresy under Queen Mary. He was executed for the actions of his followers when they tried to kill a catholic member of the Queens court. John was given a chance to live if he converted to Catholicism, he denied the request.
