Winston is the same as everybody else on the outside, but on the inside he is a much different person. In order to survive, he hides his true feelings of love, intelligence, and curiosity. In my opinion, the song People Are Strange portrays how Winston acts and feels throughout the novel. The first quote that jumped out at me was, “When you’re strange, no one remembers your name”(The Doors). The reason I think this quote ties into the book so well is because all those who are different and pose a threat to maintaining equality are killed. After one is killed, or as the book calls it, “vaporized”, history is changed so that there is no record that that human ever existed. Winston constantly says that he is scared of being caught. The one main difference I have seen in her is that she has been against the party for a longer period of time, but she doesn’t want to start rebelling; she just want to be with Winston. Based on this and more, I would say the song Love Story by Taylor Swift best represents this characters role in this novel. The reason I pick this song for Julia is because her role in the novel is basically to show a love story between Winston and her. It is relates to the Romeo and Juliet love story in the sense that they get separated and don’t know if either of them is dead or alive. The lyrics “Romeo, take me somewhere we can be alone, I’ll be waiting; all that’s left to do is run” (Swift) connects to Julia in the book in many ways. In a direct way it relates to what she says because she literally tells him to meet her in an isolated location so that nobody will know that they are there. In the last part of the quote, “all that’s left to do is run”(Swift) relates to Julia because that is basically her attitude on life. She has learned quite well how to run away for pieces of time, and she and Winston also run away from society by renting out and living in the room in Charrington’s shop. “The clever thing was to break the rules and stay alive all the same” (Orwell 109). This quote supports that all she really cares about is herself and her relationship with Winston. Also, the fact that she is breaking the rules to see him also means that she is risking …show more content…

A song that represents his role in the story well is The Show Must Go On by Queen. The title of the song basically explains the theme that his role portrays; when people die, everyone else parts with it and lives on. In the history of the world Winston lives in, there are mass killings of thousands of people to take out the people who threaten to make the world unequal. Somehow when these mass murders occur, everyone is oblivious that it even happens. In the song is The Show Must Go On, Queen says, “I guess I’m learning, I must be warmer now, I’ll soon be turning, round the corner now” (Queen). The first part of this quote relates to Syme because as he is learning and getting smarter, he is drawing more attention and being closer to getting killed. The second part of the quote can simply be related to Syme because he dies shortly after Winston realizes how he is too smart and will most likely be killed. After Winston has a discussion with Syme, he thinks, “It seemed to him that he knew instinctively who would survive and who would perish” (Orwell 53). At that point he knew Syme would be vaporized, but did not even think about doing anything about it. No matter what Winston would do to try and save Syme would not work. If he were to try and save him, he would be killed along with Syme. And after their deaths, someone working in Winston’s department would
