In “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer” Tom is a mischievous boy who seems to get into trouble all the time. He often is doing things like skipping school and stealing sugar. Despite this he is a pretty good kid. Some of the most memorable scenes in the book were because of Tom-- for example, when the boys ran away to be pirates, when Tom had to paint the fence, and when he was in McDougal’s Cave.He is a leader most of the time as you find out in the book. Tom is a follower at times, like the time he went with Huck to the graveyard because Huck wanted to get rid of his warts. That was all Hucks idea but Tom still is a leader because of all the leader like things he does

After Becky had broken Tom’s heart he wants to run away and become a pirate. He gets Joe Harper and Huckleberry Finn to tag along with him. They run away to Jackson’s Island. Tom and his friend survive on the island for 6 days. During this time Tom sneaks back home and almost leaves a note stating that he is alright, but soon discovers that his funeral will be on sunday. Tom being the mischievous boy he is decides to attend his funeral. Once Tom returns Joe and Huck contemplate leaving because they are getting homesick. Tom shows leadership in this scene in a humorous way. He tricks other kids into finishing painting the fence which was a punishment given to him by Aunt Polly for skipping school. He tells the kids that Aunt Polly is awfully particular about how she wants the fence whitewashed, this only makes the boys want to whitewash even more. In addition to making the boys whitewash for him he goes as far as making the boys pay him just to whitewash.
