Race is real in today’s society. It identifies differences among human beings. During slavery, this meant the difference between a slave and a slave master. The way in which race is viewed today is by far more complex that what it was. This is because it is constantly recreated to justify slavery. Race impacts our daily lives, based on how we are seen, how we see each other, and in some cases, where we live, the friends we make and the types of jobs we have.
When we think of race, we think of black and white, the oppressed and the oppressors. During the days of slavery, blacks are biologically seen as inferior to whites. Slavery’s destruction of identity, families, traditions and core values is currently one of the leading issues in The African American communities. The slave trade is highly responsible for breaking families and traditions which varied according to the different groups. Africans were forced to assimilate into the customs of the New World. Today, there are many blacks who are illiterate of their backgrounds and from whom they have a descended. They have continued to live by the traditions and religions they were forced into. In recent times, black families are still known to be broken.
As was mentioned before, illiteracy among blacks is a result of slavery. Schooling was never an option. In some families, the inability to read and write remain for generations, while in others, every generation strive for better and to be more educated for the future.
Blacks were controlled through physical and mental oppression and this has resulted in them believing that they are not able to make their own decisions and to live without being told what to do. They lack the knowledge to know that they can make a difference and that the future is in their hands. Not saying that respecting a white person is wrong, but some still possess the slave mentality and live in fear so they continue to
