Emancipation Proclamation declaring all slaves free in the rebellious states as of January 1st, 1863. 1865 was a big year for civil rights in America, the Civil War ended this year along with the assassination of abolitionists President Abraham Lincoln. Also in 1865 the 13th amendment passed which stated "Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime…”. The 13th amendment was a huge step toward racial equality nevertheless African Americans and abolitionists were nowhere near done fighting. 14th and 15th amendments soon followed the 13th with 14th amendment giving slaves freedom from slave owners and the 15th amendment giving African Americans the right to vote.
Chapter 13. Civil Rights and the Struggle For Racial Equality. The chapter deals with the topic of racial equality, the process of its development, legal basics and the difficulties in society's appreciation of the idea.
The first three chapters of the reading, The Struggle for Black Equality, Harvard Sitkoff runs through the civil rights movement in the 20th century; outlining the adversities facing black people, the resistance to black equality, hindrances to the already progress and the achievements made in the journey for civil rights. John Hope Franklin, in the foreword, dwells on the impact of the time between 1954 and 1992 and the impact it had on American Society, how fight for equality is far from easy and patience is required in the fight to "eliminate the road blocks that prevent the realization of the ideal of equality". In the preface, Sitkoff is clear that that history does not speak for themselves and attempt to detail any particular will be influenced by the author 's personal beliefs. Sitkoff, who associated and identified with the movement, believed "that the struggle was confronting the United States with an issue that had undermined the nation 's democratic institutions". An example would be when she states “That If I could help you to live, my blood or something that belongs to me might help you to live, it would not be a question of race.”. When she states “ My sisters black and white, " I want to say this in conclusion. We really have come too far to, again, dance backwards into what others consider to be our place.” I would say this is ethos because she makes the audience feel like they are enough and that they have fought to hatred to go back now. She states in her second paragraph that “There are brilliant men and there are brilliant women.”
Conflict theory has been used to describe the discrepancies in power and distribution of resources among the dominate group and the subordinate groups. Racial inequalities and racism among the groups has played a big role in the concept of conflict theory. Conflict theory examines the rising conflict between the dominate group, or white ruling class, and racial minorities, such as African Americans. This conflict and inequality among the races may be a reason why 20.2 percent of African American males die by homicide. In fact, African Americans are six times as likely as whites to be killed by homicide.
It sad to see that more than half of the young men in our American cities are under the control of the criminal justice system. Where’s the justice when our system automatically demotes them to a permanent second-class status, and challenges their chances of happiness and freedom. When minorities from the justice system are released, they are harshly discriminated against. This discrimination does nothing but regenerates a cycle of imprisonment. With the world at their backs, the result usually ends up with repeated behaviors that places them back into the system.
She uses ethos here because the speech is from a graduation and she’s an expert in graduating because she experienced it herself and she has an excellent life now. “Now all I have to do is take deep breaths, squint at the red banners and convince myself that I am at the world’s largest Gryffindor reunion” (Page 1, column 1, line 10-13) This is an allusion because it’s a reference to her well-known Harry Potter book series. In “ The Struggle Continues for Racial Equality in America” speech by Ginger Adams Otis, there’s a quote that explains how equality may never be achieved: “ Blacks also make forty-percent of the population in homeless shelters, although they account for thirteen-percent of the U.S population. They also have the highest rate of ‘severely cost-burdened renters’- those who pay at least half their income to rent, leaving little for continued education for themselves or their children.” Our country’s equality hasn’t changed from 1963, so equality doesn’t seem achievable. The quote proves the point that equality can’t be achievable because although the law wants equality in the United States, there are people who make it impossible. But, there are Americans with the hope that equality will be achieved, but there are people who don’t have the hope that equality will be achieved.
Solommon Yohannes October 5th, 2017 Sociology& 101 Mr. Woo Racial Inequality Viewed Through the Conflict Perspective Lens The racial inequality that we have in modern day blossomed from the historic oppression and comprehensive prejudice of minority groups. From the very beginning of “American” history, other groups of people who were not of European decent were discriminated against and treated inhumanely and without the smallest regard for their lives. Native American populations were decimated by diseases brought oversea by Europeans and forced from their ancestral lands by settlers to make room for their expanding populations.
This title will be used as an appeal to ethos for as long as she is giving speeches or for anyone who speaks of her. The sense of patriotism throughout her speech adds to this appeal as well when she makes statements such as “Because in this country, it’s never been each person for themselves. No, we’re all in this together. We always have been.
“It is a wise man who said that there is no greater inequality than the equal treatment of unequals,” was one bunch of wise words once said by Felix Frankfurter. What Frankfurter means by this is that the biggest act that is unequal is giving equal treatment to those who are not your equal. In America, there will never be a time where true racial and social equality is achieved. America will never achieve true social and equal equality, because there has been uneven social classes and different views of different people for as long as we’ve been a country, most people still view some people as their unequal whether that be because of their race or their social class, and you cannot completely control what people say and how they think about
As we reach the 21st century we would think that racial inequality has completely ended yet we continue to see much discrimination. Racial inequality continues to exist in the world and here in the United States it is a very controversial topic. Today, we watch the television and almost everyday we hear news about some type of crime or situation which regards race issues. In other words, racism is still a topic that we experience in a daily basis and continues to haunt this country. By analyzing some recent racial inequality news we can find out what continues to make this issue such a controversial topic.
Racism is defined as the poor treatment of people based on color. For as long as humans lived, millions of people have been treated poorly because of their skin color. Racism has carried throughout the many years of American history. Since the abolishment of slavery, a huge spike of racial discrimination flourished the United States and it still does. Stereotypes, racial profiling, and discrimination are signs of racism that still are shown to many people today.
Poetry Analyzation: Both Cowper and Poe have very distinct writing styles and techniques, as Cowper writes poetry that revolves around religion and Poe differs with essays that involve many imaginative and dark aspects, such as a theme of death. In one of his poems “The Negro’s Complaint” , Cowper demonstrates his writing skills through a controversial poem that brings god and slavery together. This poem was used as an act of conscience, because of the guilt he felt for the “sin” of using African-Americans as pawns of slavery by his people. Cowper made this poem to give those who are not heard, a voice, and to raise awareness for those who cannot riot or protest for their own freedom, hoping to result with putting reality into the conscience of slave owners.
