(i) What has motivated you to pursue graduate social work education? Discuss an area(s) you hope to focus on in the program and your future career as a social worker. Immigrating to Canada as a visible minority child and encountering Racism was one of my first lessons in establishing myself in a relatively homogenous population. Besides Race, I also learned that economic inequality was a distinguishing factor between my peers and I. Racism and being a visible minority were the two motivating factors that played a significant role in my desire to effect change toward the elimination of racial discrimination. Throughout my life in various forums i.e, School, employment, volunteering and in social interaction I would learn, about Racism its effects and consequences. I became aware of various types of discrimination and this further fueled my desire for social justice and equality for all, especially for those who have traditionally been marginalized. In school I learned that inclusiveness had its limitations later in university, I was educated on the social and economic aspects of Racism. In my work as a group-home counselor I became aware of the challenges faced by those with differing abilities or mental health issues. In my work in Law Enforcement and my volunteer work, I came to learn of racism from various perspectives. The areas in which I would like to focus would be Racism and Economic inequality as I feel they are correlated.
