Expository Essay #2 Question The Synar Amendment With the aim of reducing the number of tobacco-related premature deaths per year, numerous laws restricting the underage access to tobacco products were enacted by the United States government in the 1990s. The most significant one was the Synar Amendment, which was adopted in June 1992 and afterwards changed the basis of anti-tobacco regulations at both the state and local level. In this essay, I will provide a clear definition of the term as well as state the reasons for choosing it as a source for my research paper.
In California alone, the number count of deaths from smoking has been increasing every single day and has not been going down at all. In reading a article I read that a Surgeon General stated that “ Approximately half of today’s 44.8 million smokers will die prematurely from smoking-related diseases.” Prop 56 will help California put the death toll lower than it is right now. The way Prop 56 will help save many lives is by adding a $2.00 increase in the tax revenue for a cigarette or anything that contain the ingredient of nicotine. When reading a map in Tobaccofreekids.com I saw that California was the 37th out of the 50 states that had the lowest taxes on cigarettes.
College should be a place for great success stories, where students young and old beats all the ads that stocks against them and achieved their dreams, and not a place where they must be constantly worried about getting sick from other people unhealthy lifestyles. Moreover, William Paterson needs to implement a policy that restricts smoking on campus so that every student and faculty members are protected in a fair way. This is fair because the argument is not to say that the University will not accept students who smoke, it just means that they must not smoke on the campus. In that case, students can smoke before they come to school instead of smoking at the library entrance and that should not be a hard policy to put in place it should be a no-brainer especially since William Paterson is largely a commuter’s college and most of the population does not smoke. Nonetheless, maybe one of the factors that are holding back William Paterson from implementing such policy is that Administration feared that they would experience a decline in their enrollment.
Archie’s target audience is not aimed exclusively towards smokers only but for non-smokers as well. His statement, “If you’re a non-smoker you may think the current attempts to ban smoking in America have nothing to do with you. But if you give me two minutes, I 'll tell you why I think it 's important that you know what 's going on and how it 's going to affect you.” Archie is committed to explain the cause and effect of banning smoking in America to individuals who do not smoke, thus persuading non-smokers to be on the same team as smokers who will be affected by
An overall goal of Healthy People is to enhance the health of all population, predicted reduction for lung cancer from 2007 to 2020 is 10% (Cuyahoga County Board of Health, 2016). According to Center for Disease and Prevention (CDC) (2016), the Healthy People 2020 focuses on three main points when it comes to tobacco use. The first main area that Healthy People 2020 is focusing on when it comes to tobacco use is implementing policies to decrease the tobacco use, especially in younger generations (CDC, 2016). The second area of focus is on health system changes by increasing accessibility, affordability to smoking cessation treatments and resources (CDC, 2016). Even though teens and young adults consume alcohol does not mean that it is a right thing to do, it can be dangerous and harmful to your body. To clarify, alcohol drinking can interfere with the development of the young adult brain. With that being said it can interfere with controlling anger, fear, and your happiness. The more permanent effects can be memory loss and weakness in your muscles and bones. In fact, lowering the drinking age would let more use of illegal drugs.
Most people who smoke say they started young, so putting an age restriction, having a more smoke-free environment, and raising taxes on cigarettes will prevent young people from being able to get their hands on tobacco products or wanting to. With less tobacco use in the world, more people will be healthier and life expectancy will rise, not only because they will not be putting dangerous chemicals in their bodies, but the pollution caused by cigarettes will decrease. It would be nice to see less littered cities and states and have more clean air to breathe. Overall, the country and the world will be happier and healthier. This will improve the lives of the people, though not everyone will always comply, but according to data in previous paragraphs if we try and make an effort tobacco can eventually become a thing of the
These people claim that smoking marijuana is harmful to the lungs and brain development of teenagers. Cigarettes have the same, if not greater, damaging effect on human lungs yet the government does not infringe upon Americans’ right to take such health risks. Although there have been no scientific study to validate that smoking marijuana damages brain development, a simple resolution would be to make the legal age for smoking and possessing marijuana in the mid 20’s when the brain is completely developed. The argument of the dangers of marijuana can also be made for the opposing side. Illegal and unregulated marijuanna posing far more dangers to people than if marijuana was regulated by the government.
The spokesman for the Smokers’ Rights Party, Clinton Mead, reported that the health costs acquired through smoking are covered by the tax revenue . The overall economic and health benefits outweigh these costs as can be seen in this table. Plain packaging has effectively decreased smoking rates, especially in younger people. Smoking in people aged 14 years and older decreased from 16.6% in 2007 to 12.8% in 2013 . Also in 2013, tobacco clearances fell 3.4% and 2014’s estimated expenditure on smoking decreased from $3.508 billion to $3.405 billion .
Therefore, legislation should ban smoking in cars carrying children under the age of eighteen. By smoking while carrying children in the car, parents, guardians, or other adults neglect the adolescent passengers from their right to live without secondhand smoke-induced health complications. Sadly, children may disagree with their parents smoking, but they do not have a choice but to live with their guardian’s habit. Doctors have shared chilling stories about parents exposing their children to tobacco use.

It is important that current smokers have proper programs designed to help them quit smoking. Banning smoking only helps the people that do not smoke while ignoring the fact that many people are heavily addicted to tobacco. Another way that the plan is successful is because it reduces student exposure to smoking. With designated smoking areas instead of a smoking ban, the overall number of students that smoke is nearly double that of campuses with smoking or tobacco bans.
